It Live in the Basement

After my husband died, I set out to publish his stories that sat around for years, languishing in boxes, gathering dust bunnies.  And a few spiders.  Ewww!!  Anyway, I self-published It Lives in the Basement back in July, 2013.

IT LIVES IN BASEMENT 3

At that time, I had very limited funds.  What money I had, I spent on books learning how to write.  So I didn’t hire an editor/proofreader, or buy a professional cover.  And yes, my book has proofreading errors, and yes, the cover is amateurish.  After I published The Secret of Excalibur and We Journey No More, I  even quit marketing my Basement book.  I knew it wasn’t up to par.  But the strange thing is, that little amateurish looking book cover sells.  Or, it could be the title.  Either way, I’ve sold more copies of that book over the last several months than I have my other two, when they’re not on promo.

A good friend of mine recently read my Basement book, which she loved, albeit the proofreading errors.  Her biggest complaint was the cover.  She thought it represented a YA book, since a girl with pigtails is depicted on the cover.  That got me thinking.  I have the money now, not like I’m rolling in it, mind you, but my book needs a facelift.  So, I sent my manuscript to another friend, who is now my editor, and today, we worked on a new cover.

So, moment of truth.  Better or worse?  Maybe a different font type or contrast?  Would this cover compel you to buy the book? Let me know what you think.

I like the new cover. It has the feel of a horror movie poster.
