Q&A with Creativia Author Mari Collier

    Mari Collier

Today I have another awesome Creativia author on my blog: Mari Collier.  Welcome.  Smile I haven’t had the chance to read any of your books, yet.  I’ve had my eye on them since you joined Creativia.  So, you have a new release.  Let’s talk about that.

The newest release in the Chronicles of the Maca, is Thalia and Earth, Book 5. I’m working on the next one, but it is not titled as yet. Thalia and Earth will follow the exploits of Llewellyn, Maca of Don, and his Earth, Thalian, and Justine family.

    What is the story about?

Llewellyn and his Earth family that accompanied him to Thalia will finish battling the Sisterhood. Then after marriages, peace, and prosperity, they decide to return to Earth and check on the relatives and their business enterprises there. The Earth family and Earth have changed so much that they are not really remembered. Earth itself is far different and one of Lorenz’s descendants has inherited his Justine ability to kill people with his mind. Two of the Earth, Justine, Thalians are vying for the position of family doctor, and another is trying to destroy the corporation as it exists. On their return trip to Thalia, they discover a downed Golden One, a spaceship of the Justines, has been destroyed by an unknown force calling themselves the Draygons. It took over fifteen Draygon ships to destroy the Justine one, but they are an unknown danger. The Thalians and their allies must prepare for eventual war.

    Who is the main character?

It depends upon which planet we are on, but Llewellyn, Maca of Don, the MacDonald of Earth remains as the unifying figure. Ardith and Myra Rolfe are cousins and both are descendants of Llewellyn take up quite a few chapters.

    What inspired this tale?

The family that grew in my mind. They continue to have adventures no matter the planet they inhabit. They love, they quarrel and will meet any challenge the fates throw at them.

How did the story come to you?

It was just there in my head. I could (and still can) see the characters, hear them, smell them, and listen to their chatter.

Did you have to research for this novel and if so, why?

Yes, I did for certain areas. I had to make sure a certain meeting by the President of the United States had taken place in Area 51 or Washington D.C. as it had been many years since I had read in the papers about a Presidents surprise conference when it was thought he was on vacation. It was indeed Area 51. Then I needed the terminology for certain medical conditions. The latter was moved to the WIP.

If you did research, what do you think surprised you most to learn and why?

Perhaps it was the response from someone who had been involved with the Project Blue Book. The gentleman has since passed so there can no longer be a confirmation. He felt I should leave that chapter out again as I had planned to put it in Before We Leave.

Do you relate to your character?

Not to Llewellyn, but, yes, I can relate to the members of his Earth family that retain their German-Lutheran heritage.

Is your protagonist anything like you personally?

No, since most of my protagonists are male, but even Anna, the Earth woman who marries MacDonald is more like my mother in personality.

What made you write this character; what made them important to you or made you want to tell their story?

Llewellyn appeared to stop Lorenz in Gather The Children. He had to have the mind abilities of the Justines, and somehow my mind knew that he was bigger and broader than average.

Is there anything specific you want readers to know about this piece of work?

It is a wild tale that takes you into different cultures, and looks at some of the follies of Earth.

Has the book already been published?

    Yes.

Okay, let’s learn more about you, as a writer. Who is Mari Collier?  What inspired you to start writing?

I received an A for a story I wrote for an English class in the sixth grade. The two girls in my class liked it so much they wanted me to write a Western romance. So I obliged as I had just read Stocky, Boy of West Texas and also some of Zane Grey’s westerns. They “oohed and “aahed” over the tale.

What is your favorite book you have written and why.

I cannot say. That would be like picking a favorite child.

When you are not writing, what do you do to recharge?

Play solitaire, work a crossword puzzle, volunteer at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, work outside.

Are you an Indie Author or are you part of a publishing house?

Since all my novels and anthologies are going through Creativia, it makes me a hybrid. Creativia does not call itself a publishing house, therefore we are still Indies, but as long as they keep doing the superb job that they are doing, I’m content.

Do you read books within the genres you write?

I don’t know of any that are quite like mine. The Twisted Tales, though, yes I do read. I also read science fiction.

Besides being an author, do you have a second job?.

No, I have retired from Nintendo of America. I do volunteer at the local museum once or twice a week, but those are but three hour stints.

What do you enjoy most about being an author?.

Seeing the people in my head telling their stories and then hearing from the ones that have become so involved in the story or with one of the characters.

Okay, let’s meet your character.  Who are you?  What is your name?

Llewellyn, Maca of Don, but on Earth I was Zebadiah L. MacDonald.

Are you a fictional or historical character?

On the planet Thalia I am still a living being, but on Earth even my own House will consider me a work of fiction.

What should we know about you?

That I will fight all to protect my House and my planet. I would like to protect Earth as it gave me refuge, but the beings there make that difficult.

Tell us about your story:  When and where is your tale set?

It started ere I was even born when the Justines and the Krepyons defeated Thalia in battle. One of our own had betrayed us. My mither (mother in your language) bedded a Justine and broke his neck when he climaxed. I am the result of that union. I have the size and girth of a Thalian and the mind ability of a Justine. I was discovered when I was but one and twenty and stranded on a violent planet called Earth. I survived and my tale of love and survival are all recorded in the Chronicles of the Maca.

What is your personal goal? I mean, what do you ultimately want?

That Thalia will be prosperous and enjoy peace while, mayhap, managing the affairs of our quadrant of the galaxy.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do you face?

It seems some being tis bent on achieving control of a planet or another land. Then a new force in another part of the galaxy decided to attack. Even when beaten they plan to rebuild and attack again. Ye would need to kill them all and this in good conscience I canna do or ordered done.
