Author Interview with Lorna Schultz Nicholson

Author Interview with Lorna Schultz Nicholson

Today, I’d like to introduce Author Lorna Schultz Nicholson to my blog.  Welcome, and thank-you for taking the time to answer my questions.  So, let’s get started.

What inspired you to start writing?

My mother inspired to write because she taught me to love books. I was encouraged to read and I loved reading as a kid.

What’s your favorite book you’ve written and why?

I don’t have a favorite. Sometimes, kids ask me this same question and I answer it that would be like asking me if I have a favorite child. They usually laugh and say that would be mean.

What are the best and worst aspects of writing?

I love the energy behind the first draft, but I LOVE the second draft where I can add and subtract. I think the hardest thing for me is the business side, where I am always thinking of what I can put on social media, and filling out invoices for schools, and answering emails for media. Also, the waiting time in publishing is so crazy. Everything is hurry up and wait. It takes so long to get the book on to the shelf once you have written it. And you have to keep ahead of everything, and always be thinking of new ideas, and pitching them, so you don’t have a dry period.

How do you balance marketing one book and writing the next?

Good question. Marketing is so important and sometimes as a writer all you want to do is write that next book but you have to market. And with marketing how do you know what works and what doesn’t until you try. So, sometimes you do a lot and don’t see any sales and think…did I waste my time. But you have to keep trying. So marketing can be something that you need to do as the book is coming out and just enjoy it and not think about that next idea that just wants to be written. Yes, the ideas are like spoiled children, always wanting to come first.

Are you an Indie Author or are you part of a publishing house?

I’m part of a few publishing houses. Being an Indie author is not my deal because the marketing is just too hard, and I do love a good edit.

What do you enjoy most about being an author?

The writing of the book, coming up with the ideas, the creative process. But I also love meeting readers, especially when I’m at conferences and schools.

Do you read books in the genre you write?

Absolutely!!!!

When you’re not writing, what do you do to recharge?

I love sports and fitness and reading. I always have. I guess that’s why I write so many sports books. I run, golf, swim, bike, hike. I love spending time with my children, and I love reading. Family is super important to me, in fact it trumps everything. Oh, and my dogs. Lol. I walk my dogs all the time.

Besides being an author, do you have a second job?

No. Being mainly a children’s author you kind of have a second job with school visits and tours. I do a lot of school visits and love them so although that is an extension of the job, it is also a second job. You have the writing, and you have your school tours.

What makes you laugh?

Hahahaha. So many things. When I get with my children (they are late twenties now) we laugh all the time. All. The. Time. I love laughing and always have. I also laugh with my sisters!

What (not who) would you take to a lonely island?

My computer for sure. Or a notebook if there is no electricity.

Who would you like to invite for dinner?

Jesus.

Okay, now it’s time to meet one of your characters. Which book is your character from?

Fragile Bones.

Fragile Bones: Harrison and Anna (One-2-One Book 1) by [Lorna Schultz Nicholson]

Who are you and what is your name?

Harrison.

Are you a fictional or historical figure?

Fictional.

What should we know about you?

I have high functioning autism. When I am anxious, I recite the bones of the body because I love medical information. I love Grey’s Anatomy.

Tell us about your story. When and where is your tale set?

I am a high school student and it is hard for me to be at school because I’m not like everyone else. I live in modern day times.

What is your personal goal? What do you ultimately want?

I want to do things like other kids. I think I might want to have a girlfriend. But to me that means a girl who is a friend. I’m not sure I want to kiss a girl because germs get transmitted through saliva.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do your face?

I don’t like walking over lines to get into new rooms. So I have to go to a meeting for the Best Buddies club at my school, and I need to walk over the line. This is hard for me. But I do it. And I think I might like the Best Buddies Club as long as they don’t have parties and serve food on big trays.
