1989

The prison guard spoke softly into a communicator on his shoulder, and the steel door opened with a metallic echo in the corridor. The guard looked first at Isabelle, then at Mr. Dunn, asking, “Do you want me to stay?”

Isabelle replied, “Thank you, officer, but no. You’ve done your part.”

The guard nodded and left them in the death row area. They heard the sound of metal on metal as the door locked behind them, sending a small shiver through Isabelle’s heart. But she straightened her jaw and stepped into the cell, with Mr. Dunn following closely behind.

She removed her hat and held it like a weapon. The edge of its brim was thin and stiff enough to slice. Isabelle knew her toughness often intimidated men, but this disturbed individual would likely see her as a beauty queen. Mr. Dunn took a protective stance by the door, his size and the scar running from his eyebrow to his chin making it clear why he was there.

Surveying the cell, which was barely larger than a cheap walk-in closet, Isabelle noted the metal bed, stainless-steel toilet, and sink. In her opinion, this minimalist setup was more than the inmate deserved; far too lavish. She adjusted her posture, shifting into business mode, tilting her head back to exude confidence and becoming the salesperson she was meant to be.

“Hmm. John Spenkelink’s old cell. I know you’re awake, Mr. Bundy.”

Ted Bundy, lying on the bed with his back to them, sat up, feigning disturbed sleep. He yawned, blinked his eyes, and smiled disarmingly. The news photos hadn’t lied; he was indeed a handsome man. Yet, Isabelle recalled how he wielded his charm and good looks like weapons. Maintaining her poker face, she thought of the thirty women he had confessed to killing, with hints of even more hidden in unmarked graves.

“You have me at a disadvantage,” Bundy said, keeping his gaze fixed on hers. “But who wouldn’t be disadvantaged in here?”

Isabelle ignored him and began her presentation. “I’m Dr. Quint. My associate is Mr. Dunn. We’re from Blunt Point Labs. Mr. Bundy, the governor absolutely will not consider a stay of execution.” She glanced at her watch again, already aware of the time. “In less than twenty-four hours, you’re going to die. We can’t prevent that.”

“Then why bother me?”

Isabelle remained stoic; this was her favorite part. “Mr. Bundy, we’re here to make you an offer you can’t refuse. A chance to serve mankind in a positive way.”

Bundy raised his eyebrows. “Serve mankind? When I’m dead?”

Mr. Dunn moved as if cued; it was the signal for him to take the next step. He reached into the satchel, pulled out some important-looking papers, and handed them to Isabelle. She held them just out of Bundy’s reach. His gaze flickered to the papers momentarily.

She continued, “You’ll be dead alright, but I think you’ll find this to be a fair offer.” She handed the papers to Bundy, who studied them intently for several long minutes with a practiced legal eye. Suddenly, he looked up.

“How does it work? There aren’t any laws to protect the dead. Blunt Point has this kind of power?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll need a pen.”

“Yes, you will. But before you sign, I want to know why you tortured, raped, and murdered thirty innocent women.”

Bundy grinned mischievously. Everything about him was likable. Isabelle forced herself to frown.

“Thirty?” he asked. “You think small, Doctor.” He paused, as if considering his words. Isabelle realized he wasn’t thinking at all; he was remembering. Bundy’s smile turned predatory. “Having those women tied up and terrified was the ultimate aphrodisiac. They knew they were going to die because of me. To them, I was their angry god.”

If Isabelle had been holding a chainsaw at that moment, she would have used it on him. Instead, she forced herself to remain unresponsive to Bundy’s comment. She didn’t need to look back at Mr. Dunn to know his expression had not changed; it rarely did.

With no visible reaction from his visitors, Bundy shrugged. He raised his hand as if holding an invisible pen, wiggling his fingers in a gesture that conveyed, “I still need something to write with.” Mr. Dunn reached into his coat and pulled out a ballpoint pen, offering it to Bundy. Carefully and neatly, Bundy signed each page and initialed several others. He returned the pen to Mr. Dunn and handed the papers to Isabelle.

“When do we start?” he asked, excitement bubbling in his voice like a child eager for an adventure.

Isabelle provided the answer he needed. “As soon as you die.”

Set in the foothills of the Appalachians, fourteen-year-old Caleb Austin and his friend Marlee (Mary Lee) Patterson face poverty and prejudice in their small rural town. Confronted with the “creek people” who live in the hollow and the wild child Annabelle Pruitt, their lives take an exciting turn.

Read an Excerpt

Marlee hurried to the edge of the creek and stopped before her shoes touched the water. Any other time, Caleb knew that she wouldn’t have hesitated to splash through the creek, but if she came home with wet shoes and a muddy dress today, her mother would have a few good words for her, to say the least.

“Hello!” Marlee called into the doghobble thicket on the opposite bank. Caleb stood, sheltered by a poplar tree, and watched, expecting Smoky Pruitt and his hounds to come crashing through the brush any minute.

“Annabelle. Are you there?” Marlee bent and studied the undergrowth. Suddenly, Annabelle appeared next to a large hickory tree. The girl stood motionless, like a rabbit spotted in a briar thicket. Her hair was shoulder-length and unkempt, and she wore a dirty dress that draped to mid-calf, ending a few inches above her leather shoes.

I was almost at the exit when a hand grabbed my wrist.
At first, I thought it was a pushy homeless person asking for money.
They do that sometimes.
So, instead of screaming my head off, like a normal woman, I used a go-away spell.
Something designed to make humans leave you alone, no matter the situation.
One of the first spells a magician learns.
But, nothing happened.
The grip around my wrist got tighter. The fingers dug into my flesh. Hurting me.
Panic surged through my body.
This shouldn’t have been possible.
At the same time my body began to feel heavy and weak. Like I’d been drugged.
“Get off me,” I said, though my voice sounded distant, like it was coming from down a very long tunnel.
I tried another spell. But, still nothing. Like a light switch had been flipped off.
“Where is it?” the man hissed.
His voice was horrible. Like nails on chalkboard.
I looked into his face and for the first time saw the person who was attacking me.
Except, he wasn’t a person at all.
He wasn’t even a human.
There were two black holes where his eyes should have been. His skin was a horrible green-grey colour. Tight against his bones.
“Where is it?” he repeated, close enough for me to smell his breath.
It smelled of death.
“Where’s what?” I said. “Let go of me!”
But the weakness was growing. I was having difficulty keeping my eyes open.
My tongue felt like a big, fat walrus laying down in my mouth.
Before I knew it, I was on the ground. The thing was on top of me. Pinning me down so hard I could barely breathe.
I was sure I was going to die.
If only I’d stayed in bed with Blake, I thought. None of this would be happening.
“Blake,” I whispered.
“Where is it?” the monster snarled. “Tell me!”
Tears started running down my cheeks.
I turned to look him in the eyes. Not that he had any. But maybe he’d believe me if he could see I really meant it.
“I don’t know,” I said, “you’ve got the wrong person!”
He made a ghastly, whistling sound.
I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the worst. But suddenly his hand let go of my wrist.
The weakness disappeared, and the weight that had been pinning me down vanished.
Carefully, I opened my eyes and saw the monster standing beside me, wobbling gently from side to side, his hands covering his ears.
There was a man holding him by the collar.
A huge, tall man wearing a top hat and a tuxedo. Like he was just on his way to a wedding.
Even in the rain I could see the ice blue of his eyes.
Piercing and deadly.
“Canum sali luet ria, pani rostum luet si,” he bellowed, casting a spell, “Canum sali luet ria, pani rostum luet si.”
The words kept getting faster and faster. He spoke with a powerful, rhythmic venom.
Then, in one swift movement, he punched his fist straight through the monster’s chest.
His hand came out the other side holding its heart.
I turned my head away, afraid. And when I looked back they had disappeared.
Both of them. Without a trace.

Goddess Fish Promotions: THE RADICAL REALISM OF JESUS Blurb Blitz & Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jeyran Main will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The Radical Realism of Jesus explores how Christ’s life and teachings confront the assumptions of our modern world. From rationalism and empiricism to pragmatism and nihilism, Jesus’ words intersect with philosophy, science, and contemporary culture—offering a lived, transformative faith that challenges, inspires, and equips readers to live fully in the 21st century.

Read an Excerpt

From the beginning, Jesus has consistently defied human expectations. He clashed with religious authorities, challenged societal norms, and even surprised his own disciples. Faith, as Kierkegaard emphasized, is a tension-filled encounter with the unpredictable claim of God. Jesus does not allow us to tame Him with neat definitions; He is the living Word who confronts our assumptions and stretches our understanding of God and the world.

In a modern age defined by scientific revolutions, technological advancements, and rationalist philosophies, many of us search for certainty, meaning, and moral guidance. Yet, the Gospel remains disruptive. Jesus is not an abstract ideal; He is historical, embodied, and relational. He experienced hunger, fatigue, betrayal, and hope. He engaged life fully, showing that realism and spiritual depth are not mutually exclusive. Even in a world governed by measurement, reason, and empiricism, Jesus challenges us to consider ethics, purpose, and human flourishing in ways that transcend material explanation.

This book examines Jesus within contemporary frameworks of thought—from Rationalism and Empiricism to Pragmatism and Scientism—showing that His life and teachings remain radically relevant. The Kingdom of God is not abstract; it demands reflection, engagement, and action. Jesus remains aspirational and transformative, inviting each reader to wrestle with faith, reason, and the meaning of life in a modern context.

Ava told herself she had a job to do.
A simple vitals check. Routine. Clinical.

But the second Caleb stepped out of his hoodie, every ounce of training she’d ever had tried to evaporate at once.

Under the thin lantern light, he looked unreal – like someone carved him in secret and forgot to tone it down for real life. Broad shoulders, smooth lines of muscle, a chest that rose and fell in slow, steady waves. Even the long cut of his waist looked sculpted, defined by a faint shadow that dipped beneath the band of his shirt.

She swallowed hard. Professional. She had to stay professional.

“Sit… sit still,” she said, though her voice wavered.

Caleb obeyed, but the motion only made things worse – muscles shifting under his skin like a quiet ripple, arms flexing as he rested them on his knees. There were faint veins along his forearms, subtle but impossible to ignore, and his hands… strong, warm-looking, capable.

Ava’s fingers hovered before she touched him.

Focus. Just focus.

But then she wrapped the blood pressure cuff around his arm, and her fingertips brushed the heat of his skin – the kind of heat that wasn’t just temperature. Caleb drew in a breath, low and surprised, and she felt it like a pulse of electricity between them.

“You okay?” he asked softly.

“Yeah,” she lied instantly.

His eyes flicked to her mouth for half a second – half a second – and her heartbeat misfired so hard she nearly fumbled the stethoscope.

Get it together, Ava.

She leaned closer, pretending she needed to hear his pulse better, but really just trying to anchor herself. Caleb smelled faintly of clean soap and something warm, something masculine that made her knees weaken.

“Your heart rate’s elevated,” she murmured.

His voice dropped: “Yours too.”

Her hands trembled.

Professional. Right. Any second now.

Light Years to Midnight

by Dustin Blackwall

Genre: SciFi Thriller

When data itself begins to speak, who decides what it’s trying to say?

Light Years To Midnight — a globe-spanning thriller where science, faith, and code collide in a race against a countdown written into the fabric of reality.

The wind whipped dust across the plateau as Jonas crested the ridge, breath burning in his throat. Below him, the satellite dishes of the abandoned relay station stretched into the dark like a field of frozen giants. Their metal frames groaned under the rising storm, each bent toward the same invisible point on the horizon.

He wasn’t alone.

A faint beam of light—too controlled to be an accident—flickered between the dishes. Jonas crouched, heart thudding, watching as a woman stepped into view, her silhouette sharp against the skeletal machinery. She moved with the alertness of someone who had been running for far too long.

Elena.

He had seen her face in files, in encrypted packets, in the warnings that had chased him across continents. But seeing her here, in the flesh, felt unreal—like walking into a photograph he wasn’t meant to understand.

Before he could speak, a second figure emerged from the opposite end of the array. Maya paused only when she spotted Elena, recognition flaring across her face. They had never met, not really, but the anomaly had braided their paths tightly enough that the moment felt inevitable.

Jonas stood and lifted a hand, but movement in the distance froze him mid-step.

Engines.

Low, tactical, deliberate.

A convoy approached from the north, its headlights dark, its tires crunching through gravel like muffled gunfire. Special operations—unmarked, unhurried, confident. Not hunters, but collectors.

Elena’s eyes locked on his.
“Are they here for you,” she whispered, “or for all of us?”

Maya stepped closer, her breath sharp in the cold air. “Does it matter?”

Something pulsed beneath the earth—three beats, a pause, three more—vibrating up through the metal frames of the dishes. The sky above them shimmered, faint but unmistakable, as if answering the rhythm.

Jonas swallowed hard.

“No,” he said. “It doesn’t matter anymore. It’s already found us.”

Dustin is a lifelong fan of science and speculative fiction, blending his fascination with astronomy, technology, and the unknown into stories that explore the edge between logic and wonder. When he’s not writing, he’s reading, stargazing, or chasing trails on his dirt bike — always searching for what lies just beyond understanding.
