A Stunning new Queer Cyberpunk Epic By O.E. Tearmann

Aidan Headly never wanted to be the man giving orders.

Now the Wildcards are known for creative insubordination, chaos, and commanders begging to be reassigned.

Scorpion Scheme: Death and Danger on the Nile (Hope Sze medical mystery Book 8) by [Melissa Yi, Melissa Yuan-Innes]

MURDER AND MYSTERY IN THE UTOPIA OF EGYPT by one of Canada’s top thriller authors, MELISSA YI

PHARAOHS’ TOMBS. ANCIENT MYTHS. MODERN-DAY MURDER

Dr. Hope Sze doesn’t need a free trip to Egypt.

She can’t afford the flight to Cairo, or the cruise down the Nile, so she’d keep studying in Canada—except her fiancé, Dr. John Tucker, yearns to patrol the pyramids and confront the curse on King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

So when a company offers them both a free stay in Cairo in exchange for a month’s work in an emergency department, Tucker lobbies for a pre-honeymoon in the Valley of Kings and Queens, investigating the windswept temple of Hatshepsut, or scuba diving in the Red Sea.

Instead, within 90 minutes of arrival, Hope drops to her knees outside the Grand Egyptian Museum, desperate to save a now-comatose 87-year-old Johannesburg man who’d raved about Kruger and treasure after receiving a nail through his skull.

Tucker fixates on their one chance at the legendary Kruger Millions, a rumoured fortune that many believe lies secretly stowed somewhere in South Africa.

Since their combined student debt load totals half a million dollars, Tucker can’t pass up the possibility of a treasure trove in buried gold.

Hope launches into her first mystery based in a birthplace of human civilization.

Where the evil god Set battled righteous Horus and Isis in an 80-year war.

Where wealth and power clash with political revolution.

Where Antony fell in love with Cleopatra.

Where Hope and Tucker must outwit, or fall prey, to a ruthless criminal mastermind.

March 2021 Multi Genre Free and Discounted eBooks–1st to 15th

FRIENDS of JUSTICE: Arbor Day 2012 | Charlie brown tree, Charlie brown characters, Charlie brown

When I was a kid, March meant kit flying weather, because the winds always pick up this time of year.  In our local store, there would be boxes filled with kite making kits.  You know the kind?  Cheap, thin wooden sticks tied into a T, see-through paper to go over it, and whatever scraps of material you found to make your own tail.  My dad would take us to an area perfect for flying kits.  He would get those kites to flying.  Me?  I was like Charlie Brown.  I marveled at how high people could get their kits to fly.  Mine never left the ground.  LOL.  Nowadays, kids sit on their devices and miss the thrill of watching their kite soar through the air.  Or, get eaten by a tree.

Book Review: Awakening (The Ydron Saga Book 1) by Raymond Bolton

Awakening (The Ydron Saga Book 1) by [Raymond Bolton]

Book Review: Awakening (The Ydron Saga Book 1) by Raymond Bolton

Book Description:

How does a world equipped with bows, arrows and catapults, where steam power is just beginning to replace horses and sailing ships, avert a conquest from beyond the stars?

Prince Regilius has been engineered to combat the Dalthin, a predatory alien species that enslaves worlds telepathically, and to do so he must unite his people. But when his mother murders his father, the land descends into chaos and his task may prove impossible. Faced with slaying the one who gave him life in order to protect his world, he seeks a better way. Set in a vast and varied land where telepaths and those with unusual mental abilities tip the course of events, Awakening goes to the heart of family, friendship and betrayal.

My Review:

After not reading a book for ages, and then a purchase of a new Kindle, I opened it up and found that I started this story.  Seems I bought it back in July 2014.  Hmm.  I started reading from where I’d left off but couldn’t remember any of the story, and it did intrigue me, so went back to the beginning.

Awakening is an epic fantasy with a vast world and multiple characters and story arcs.  As the blurb states, their planet, their lives are being manipulated by an alien race with telepathic abilities.  The Dalthin are shapeshifters so they can meld into any world they want to dominate to eat.  Yes, eat.  Not very pleasant creatures.  However, when they settle on this new world, they bite off more than they can chew.  Pun intended.

We have several villain’s in this tale.  The worst is perhaps the Queen.  Not only did she murder the King, now she wants to capture and kill her children.  All for greed and power.  What she doesn’t’ realize is that she is also being used.  She is but a puppet.  An expendable one at that.

The hero’s are the two children and their trusty friends.  Some don’t survive to see the Change that shapes their world.  There are battles, there are chases and escapes.  Lots of action and adventure, right?  Well, sort of.  For me, this was not a page-turning story.  I set this book down before years ago and forgot it.  Even when I went back to it, it still took me several months to finish the tale.  It’s just didn’t grip me like I wanted.

Part of the problem is the characters are all the same.  The same thoughts, manners, speech, etc.  You can’t tell a common fold from a royal.  No individualism.  They wee flat and one dimensional.  What makes it worse is that you go along with lots of dialogue between characters and no dialogue tags.  Which is great really.  But they all sounded the same, so sometimes I had to go back and reread to see who was actually doing the talking.  Action beats would’ve been really helpful and would’ve gave the author a chance to add more depth to them.

I pushed myself though the story as I did want to see how it ended.  It was meh.  There are three other books in the series.  I won’t be reading.  Maybe Bolton has improved his writing.  I’ll never know.  Too many other books to read.  All in all, I do recommend it when on sale.  I give it 3 stars.

Game Review: Legends of Eisenwald

Game Review: Legends of Eisenwald

The Legends of Eisenwald is a game released in July 2015 by Aterdux Entertainment.  It is an adventure game with tactical battles, RPG and strategy elements. Take the lead of a small feudal army and try to defend your right to survive in this ruthless medieval world.

The mysterious lands of old Germany are waiting for you – it’s a land where the superstitions of the time have come to life. This isn’t a fantasy game. There are no elves or dragons here. There are only people – and their passions, sins and fears that often take a tangible form. Which path will you choose? Live according to your conscience? Or live by power and might? Or will you live by justice? And what is your justice, really?

MY REVIEW:

Just like books, sometimes you run across one that can be both good and bad.  Such is Eisenwald.  I really wanted to give this game a solid 4 star rating, but I just can’t.  Crying face

What I LOVED:

The graphics are amazing and I found myself enchanted by the scenery and some of the cut-screen artwork.  The attention to detail cant be beat.  A solid 5 stars.

Image result for legends of eisenwald images

If you’ve played King’s Bounty, you will be familiar with how combat works here.  It is turn-based.  There is some grinding involved, but which game doesn’t?  The description of the game states not fantasy, but thee are supernatural beings such as vampires, ghosts, and ghouls.  I love this type of combat but fighting the ghosts ended up being so annoying.  Half of your troops won’t be able to do any damage to them and it just prolongs the battle. Ugh.  4 stars.

Image result for legends of eisenwald images

The storyline is very intriguing and I enjoyed the witty dialogue.  Some of the German names were tongue twisters to an English speaking person, and I apologize for my horrid mispronunciations.  I played as the Baroness as I love ranged combat.  However, there were some encounters with NPC’s where they kept referring to me as male.  Really?  There were also numerous editing issues throughout the game.  Leave it to an author to complain.  Smile with tongue out  Four stars.

Image result for legends of eisenwald images

WHAT I HATED:

There are multiple maps we move onto as we progress through the game.  Almost every one you end up losing all your troops or get to retain only one or two.  You also lose either all your money and every thing in your inventory.  That means every new map you are hiring new people to level up again, and buying the same armor/weapons over and over.  I totally understand why so few people finish the game.   3 stars.

Image result for legends of eisenwald images

When moving around the game, some maps have horrible pathfinding.  You click on a spot and then you’re suddenly going a long way around, right into the path of your enemies.  Or,you click and click to find the exact spot you need to stand on to trigger dialogue/action.  Also, the quest instructions have a lot to be desired.  I spent forever just trying to find the Crystal Apple Tree.  Since its part of the main quest, I had no choice but to find it.  2 stars.

Image result for legends of eisenwald images

The game does have more than one ending, depending on the choices you make.  I did the REVENGE ending, as I did not want to be a puppet for Von Sterch.  However, I will never replay this game to find out how the other ending goes.  Nope.  Nada.

All in all, I do recommend this game.  However, if you do play it, you might want to use this walkthrough.  There is no way I could’ve finished this game without it.  If you paly Eisenwald and go with the other ending, please let me know how it went.

You  can check out my Let’s Play here.

COMING SOON: NEW MUSIC BY SHANE WILSON!

ABOUT SHANE:

image

Shane Wilson is a storyteller. No matter the medium, the emphasis of his work is on the magical act of the story, and how the stories we tell immortalize us and give voice to the abstractions of human experience. His first two contemporary fantasy novels as well as a stage play, set in his World of Muses universe, are currently available.

Born in Alabama and raised in Georgia, Shane is a child of the southeastern United States where he feels simultaneously at-home and out-of-place. He graduated from Valdosta State University in South Georgia with a Masters in English. He taught college English in Georgia for four years before moving to North Carolina in 2013.

Shane plays guitar and writes songs with his two-man-band, Sequoia Rising. He writes songs as he writes stories–with an emphasis on the magic of human experience. He tends to chase the day with a whiskey (Wild Turkey 101) and a re-run of The Office.

Shane’s novels are A Year Since the Rain (Snow Leopard Publishing, 2016) and The Smoke in His Eyes (GenZ Publishing, 2018). Shane’s short story, “The Boy Who Kissed the Rain” was the 2017 Rilla Askew Short Fiction Prize winner and was nominated for a 2018 Pushcart Prize. An adaptation of that story for the stage was selected for the Independence Theater Reading Series in Fayetteville, NC. More information about Shane can be found at: Shane Wilson Author
