New release of ICE: Pseudoverse Series 9 by C.G. Blade

Ice: The Ninth Novel In The Pseudoverse and an Electric Eclectic Book (Pseudoverse Series 9) by [Blade, CG, Belga, DC]

Thirty years after Pseudosynths were produced as robot slaves, they are now revered by the human race as heroes. Humanity is living a dream existence side-by-side their new artificial intelligence counterparts, Robokopias, which look, act, and talk like anyone or anybody you choose. Only the Pseudosynths remember the time shift to set the planet on the correct course in 2075 and the warning that went along with it before the Robokopias were produced. Why is this warning so important?

In Ice, if you or one of your family members die, it is your choice is to have your thoughts and memories transferred into one of these ‘Robokopias’ so you can continue to live. Almost a billion Robokopias live, work, and play next to humans around the planet with the ‘Ten Commandments of Robotics’ keeping them in line. These commandments cannot be modified, erased, or overridden. Nothing can go wrong, ever.

In the wildest artificial intelligence story that is not too far away according to experts, America finds itself wishing that they had never heard of the word “robot” as millions of Robokopias are purposely turned against their owners by a strange pyramid that may not be of this world.

Join Jaesa, Ray Nelson, General Cooper, Athana, the Xanthes, and some surprise artificial intelligence characters with a brand new cast of unique Robokopia characters who will join the fight in the most chilling and icy Pseudoverse novel. This is a novel filled with fantastic technology. Harmony’s stolen MOTT time transference plans and new pair of glasses called “Looking Glass” that allows you to look one hour into the future are used against the human race. Could this new technology eventually be used to right the wrongs done to the American people?

If you loved the Pseudoverse Series novels, which pit humans against robotics and artificial intelligence, you will love Ice and the follow-up novel, Fire. Once this ride starts, it does not stop, and we guarantee you will not be able to put it down. This “coming to a life near you soon” saga, which is positively and negatively prophesied by hundreds of scientists, transhumanists, scholars, theologians, and robotic engineers, is a chilling reminder of the upcoming “Singularity.” Which side will you be on once the war starts?

“A toast to a brave new world and the future it brings,” Hollyann smiled, raising her glass up as three of the four scientists’ clanked glasses with her.

“Ah, the ever indelible and misunderstood, Adelous Huxley,” Chilton said, staring into Hollyann’s eyes, “are we the Alphas?”

“Yes, outstanding Mr. Blaze. You are schooled in the ways of the literary world very well.” Hollyann told him, wrapping her tongue around the rim of her wine glass.

“I don’t give a fuck about Huxley!” M.J. blurted out at the top of his lungs, “I must admit you are one gorgeous whore, but I don’t do work for Russian assholes who kidnap me. Where is my wife by the way?” M.J. gave her an evil stare huffing and puffing, refusing to acknowledge her toast looking away from her.

“She is at home safe with you,” Hollyann told him, smiling. The bartender poured her another glass of wine.

“You replaced me, didn’t you, bitch?” M.J. was red-faced and angrier than a nest full of whacked hornets on a hot Georgia day. “I don’t work for your dumbass, you cunt, and I am not about to start for some artificial intelligence you bow down to. I am a teacher, and I will be dammed if I start lying in bed with dogs who assisted the very assholes responsible for the global massacre thirty years ago. They will find out that is not me in Georgia and the cops will begin a massive manhunt. You and your people are nothing but primates and animals, and I hope they put a bullet between those baby blues of yours. Better yet maybe they’ll take your head off and put it on ice for a while.” Taking a huge swig of beer M.J. was sweating. He was waiting for a response from Hollyann, but none came his way.

“Thanks to Professor Chilton Blaze no one is searching or looking for anyone in this tower or this compound including the several thousand technicians, engineers, and rocket scientists working here except Miss Reynedropolous, who cannot be imitated precisely or replaced due to the hundreds of Transhuman circuits running through her incredible body. Professor Blaze knows how easy these replacements can be duplicated and put into place over six weeks, or perhaps four weeks, don’t you?”

Why are rocket scientists here in Madagascar? Reyne thought hard about those words.

“Yes, she is correct,” Chilton, replied as the three scientists stared at him for answers. “I had no knowledge of any of this, but due to Robotica’s NDA, I currently cannot share with you what I know about the Robokopias. I am bound by Robotica’s legal obligations.”

“He is telling the truth. Now, I would like to share something with all of you,” Hollyann told them pulling a modified non-standard Vidset out of a pocket from her dress. “This is something that the Russian scientists came up with from their MKUltra trials during the 60s and 70s.” Swiping a couple of screens, her fingers were dialing a circular icon on her home page. She did not attempt to hide the Vidset from any of them as M.J. dropped his beer on the floor. It smashed on the tile in pieces. Cold-brew flew in all directions, including Reyne’s dress and Chilton’s pants. All of them backed up as M.J. became stiff as a board. Blood dripped from his nostrils. Trying to wipe the blood off his face, his hands were suddenly paralyzed as if he were in the middle of a stroke. He pissed down his own leg creating a yellow puddle on the white tile floor around his shoes.

Doctor Suleka Matthew screamed aloud. “Stop it!” She held her face in shock, not knowing what to do.

99 Cent Sale–NOBODY KNOWS by Rebecca Barber

BLURB:

Gillian Dempsey must find a reason to go on…

Easier said than done after a rare virus robs her of both parents. Left alone and confused, the mourning nineteen-year-old flees to her three best friends, who receive her with open arms.

Her parents give her more than an inheritance—they give her a second chance at life…

When Gillian is left with some properties in her parents’ will, she assigns them to a real estate agent to manage. Joel Matthews takes the job, but he quickly becomes more than a business associate. After a string of fortunate coincidences, Gillian and Joel spend a passionate night together—after which Joel all but vanishes from her life.

But they still have unfinished business, and Gillian won’t allow him to slip away—especially with her heart.

Life is a roller coaster of tragedy and joy…

Gillian reels him in, and soon the two are married. Gillian’s heart expands even more when they receive the news of their first pregnancy. But after the baby is born, things aren’t the same. Joel becomes distant…resentful. And then the abuse begins. Darkness consumes their marriage—only to get worse.

While Gillian tries to hold her family together, it seems Joel is doing everything to tear them apart. But just one slip of his temper makes all the difference, because this time, there’s no turning back.

Maybe being abused can be endured, as long as Nobody Knows…until someone ends up dead.

KNOBODY KNOWS 1

EXCEPRT:

Gillian

The scowl on his leathery face should have been enough warning to shut me up, but tonight I wasn’t in the mood to back down. I was ready for a fight. Whatever he dished out would come back at him twofold. He came through the door, ripping it almost off its hinges and letting it slam behind him. He took one look at me, sitting on the lounge quietly watching television and sipping my coffee, and rolled his eyes in disgust. I didn’t say a word. This was the game we played these days. After more than a decade of marriage, this is all we had left.

“What’s for dinner?” he snarled, his eyes filled with hatred and disgust. I just shrugged apathetically. What was I supposed to say? ‘Hi honey, how was your day? You look tired. Why don’t I just whip you up a nice, juicy T-bone steak and fresh steamed veggies?’ The truth was, I would probably be having home-brand crackers with what was left of the vegemite.

“Not sure. We don’t have much,” I admitted, instantly feeling ashamed.

I hated the fact that he could make me cower like that. Once upon a time, in another lifetime far away from this one, I felt different. I felt worthwhile and even happy. We were happy at one point, weren’t we? Somewhere along the line, I must have loved him. Otherwise I wouldn’t have married him. I can’t be that stupid, can I?

“For God’s sake, didn’t you even bother to do the shopping?” he snarled from the kitchen.

I heard him muttering to himself as he shuffled the near-empty boxes about in the pantry. Much as I hate to admit it, the profanity spraying from his lips was mighty impressive.

Stomping back into the lounge, he planted himself deliberately in front of the television, hands on his hips and a scowl on his face. Knowing what was coming, I was glad the kids were out with their godmother Heidi tonight. That was the only positive in this nightmare.

“For fuck’s sake, Gillian. I give you money. What the fucking hell do you spend it on?” he demanded, tiny bits of spittle flying from his mouth.

We had danced around this confrontation for weeks now. The tension was escalating, as was the hatred buried inside me. I don’t remember the last time that I had actually had a full night’s sleep. These days, I was too angry to sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, all I could do was imagine all the things that I wanted to do and say to him, but was too afraid to.

My life had somehow crumpled into a pathetic mess, and most of the time I hated myself for it. I was furious, and the more I saw of him, the more he continued to be the heartless barbaric bastard he had become, the worse things got, and the more I despised myself.

“Do you really want to know how fucking far your measly twenty bucks stretches these days?” I asked, keeping my face as blank as possible. He raised a quizzical eyebrow and folded his arms aggressively across his puffed out chest.

I took a deep breath, grabbed hold of the arms of my chair with both hands, and squeezed as hard as I could. When I looked down, my knuckles were white with the strain and I could hear myself grinding my teeth desperately, trying to control the rage inside me.

“Well?” he snapped, shifting his weight impatiently from one foot to another.

I exhaled heavily. “If you really want to know what happened to that twenty you gave me a week ago for food and to keep the house running, well, it bought a six-pack of home brand toilet paper, a loaf of bread, a carton of milk, vegemite, eggs, and a packet of tampons for your daughter!” I told him, ticking the items off my fingers as I announced them.

#Newrelease BONFIRE HEART by Audrina Lane

Bonfire Heart: An Electric Eclectic Book by [Lane, Audrina]

New release: BONFIRE HEART by Audrina Lane

BLURB:

Sebastian Winter is a loner with a lot on his mind. His only escape is his photography and enjoying the peace and solitude that sailing off the coast of New Zealand brings.

Lena Cavendish is the town’s rich girl who wants to break free and follow her heart. Her father wants University and a career for his daughter, she wants to write romances. She is looking for her ‘Happily Ever After’.

Falling in love can be simple but will Sebastian’s anxiety and depression push her away, just when he needs her the most?

Find out in this coming of age story set on the North Island of New Zealand.

image

EXCEPRT:

He looked down her long legs to her toes busy burying into the warm sand. Seb silently took a deep breath and placed his hand next to hers in the small gap that separated them.

“So how did you find this place?” She asked, letting her little finger hook over his. A million tiny fireflies started to flutter under his skin like they were trying to escape.

“My Dad taught me to sail and we found it on one of our adventures.”

“A family tradition then, I like it.”

“You mean it” his voice faltered.

“Yes, I hope you’ll bring me here again on our next date.”

The fireflies were now escaping into the heat on his cheeks as he felt her hand squeeze his “That’s if we’re going to be dating?”

He blinked and in the instance his eyes were shut he felt her lips touch his cheek. Taking this as a sign he pulled her tight into him and found her lips with his. A closed mouth to start as he revelled in the velvet feel and the salty taste. A tiny, tentative start to their fledgling relationship as he grew bolder and let his lips push hers open so that their tongues could meet. He heard a tiny sigh escape and rush across his skin as she responded, letting her hand run down his spine. She was everything he’d imagined and more. Like eating your favourite sweets all at once. When they parted each was breathless and in awe of the power between them, tugging at their hearts like the undercurrents of the ocean.

image

EXCERPT:

Setting off on the path behind the house he climbed the small hill to his favoured location. From the one side the town was laid out before him, the other was the rugged cliff line leading to the lighthouse. The sun was starting to turn the horizon orange, so he settled on the grass, the lighthouse in view. He watched as the light bathed its white shell pink and then orange. Taking a few shots, he waited until the sun was diving into the ocean and the colours turned to violets before dark. Then shifting into the other direction, the moon began its ascent, lighting the midnight sky with its stark white light. Once more the lighthouse was white, topped by the bright yellow light of the lamp. Sebastian loved this time of day when he got to indulge his other love after sailing. Then lying back in the grass, he closed his eyes and thought of Lena.

Today, I have Author Jane Risdon on my blog.  Welcome.  Smile

Thanks so much for asking me here, it is a delight to join you.

So, let’s get started.  What inspired you to start writing?

I’ve always wanted to write. Even as a child I used to make up stories – in my head at first – and when I could write properly I scribbled them down. I kept them secret for fear of ridicule.

Because my career in the international music business kept me busy 24/7 I had little time to write and so I had to wait until I retired to seriously begin to write full-time.

What’s your favorite book you’ve written and why?

All my books are my favourites: Only One Woman and Undercover: Crime Shorts – I love them all of course I do!

Only One Woman by [Jones, Christina, Risdon, Jane]

I have 5 more waiting to be published and I have to say that of all my books it would have to be Ms Birdsong Investigates Murder in Ampney Parva: Operation Matryoshka, which is the first in the series of novel about a former MI5 Intelligence Officer, Lavinia Birdsong, who is drummed out of the Intelligence Services after a joint operation with MI6 goes belly-up.

What are the best and worst aspects of writing?

I enjoy reading the finished product, I hate writing it and editing it before my editor gets her hands on it. I don’t mind the last stages of editing ready for publication as I can see an end in sight.

How do you balance marketing one book and writing the next?

It is difficult. Even with a publisher involved, it takes up far too much time these days and it is exhausting, I find my imagination is used up thinking of ways to engage new readers by the time I have to create a story.

Are you an Indie Author or are you part of a publishing house?

I am traditionally published for novels by Accent Press Ltd., but I also have the freedom, where collections and novellas are concerned, to publish elsewhere. The best of both worlds and I have recently self-published for the first time a collection of a few of my 100 shorts stories, Undercover: Crime Shorts.

What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Getting my hands on a paperback copy of my writing, seeing it in a store or online; from my head to the pages of a book never ceases to thrill me

Do you read books in the genre you write?

I read crime/thrillers and espionage mostly. I have never read romance yet I have written (with Christina Jones) a novel Only One Woman, which is deemed to be romance and fits into Women’s Fiction.

I have written for 15 anthologies and many of my stories are in a variety of genres so I think I can be described as multi-genre, with an emphasis on crime writing.

Only One Woman by [Jones, Christina, Risdon, Jane]

When you’re not writing, what do you do to recharge?

I write full-time, but I love to walk and visit places of interest and take photos. I blog about these trips which I call ‘jollies,’ and I research family history. I read a great deal.

Besides being an author, do you have a second job?

Not any more, as I said I was in the international music business for most of my life, managing singers, musicians, song-writers, record producers and placing music into movies and on TV soundtracks amongst other things, so writing is like relaxation for me now.

What makes you laugh?

Oh cripes don’t ask. I hate comedians and rehearsed humour. I laugh at sheer wit, at those who can say something funny on the spur of the moment. I can find humour in almost any situation which can be somewhat unfortunate.

What (not who) would you take to a lonely island?

A computer with WiFi and a supply of tea and liqourice.

Who would you like to invite for dinner?

No-one. I’ve been there done that and having spent my life having to entertain people for business – some famous people included – I’d rather eat alone unless it is with my husband and son and his family. A case of been there, done that sadly.

Okay, it’s time to meet one of your characters. Which book is your character from?

Undercover: Crime shorts – a sampler from Ms Birdsong Investigates Murder at Ampney Parva: Operation Matroyshka.

Who are you and what is your name?

I’m Lavinia Birdsong

Are you a fictional or historical figure?

Fictional

What should we know about you?

I’m ‘around’ 40, I’ve been part of the British Intelligence Services MI5 for 20 years. Until recently I was an Intelligence Officer and partnered with MI6 Officer, Michael Dante, in a joint operation between the branches of our Secret Intelligence Services. We were an ‘item’ for 4 years, but not since I got the sack. I moved out of our shared flat in London to a rural location in Oxfordshire to a premature and forced retirement – he got posted to Moscow. If I have my way it won’t be for long!

I like good wine, I’m a fan of heavy rock music and I enjoy the occasional bag of liqourice but I have to watch my figure, so sadly I cannot indulge that often. I make the exception for wine. I must have my wine.

Tell us about your story. When and where is your tale set?

It all started when I got the heave-ho from MI5, I decided to move to Oxfordshire, to the Vale of the White Horse. I have links to the county. My story is set in 2016 in the village of Ampney Parva on the Berkshire Downs in the Vale of the White Horse.

Recently a young woman, with whom I am casually acquainted since I moved to Ampney Parva, Ali Yelling, went missing and her son, Vinnie, asked me to help find her. Little did I know what lay ahead as I began to investigate her disappearance thinking it was simply a case of her spending the night with a lover and over-sleeping the next day.

Whilst searching for her I have come into contact with Michael again, met a handsome policeman, Luke Wareham, who, if he played his cards right might be in with a chance, and I have also landed right in the midst of a Russian Mafia people trafficking gang working alongside Ukrainian gun and drug traffickers who are funded by Pro-Russian factions wanting to occupy the Ukraine. It’s like old times and I love it. I’ve missed chasing down ISIS suspects and Islamic extremists, but there is the problem of Michael versus Luke – they are both acting like schoolboys over me – and of course, I need to find what happened to Ali Yelling. The juices are beginning to flow again.

Is Ali really dead, or is she working with the gangsters? During my search for her I’ve discovered she has links with a couple of them; innocent links or something more sinister?

What is your personal goal? What do you ultimately want?

I want to get back into the Service and I’ve been trying hard to find a way. Poor Ali has offered me an opportunity if I can solve her disappearance and possibly, if there is something sinister and terrible going on in Ampney Parva, I’ll sniff it out and solve, or help solve, the case, I might be in with a good chance.

I hope that my specialist skills will allow me to work with Michael and Luke in tracking down and nailing this gang which I feel will lead to me discovering what has happened to Vinnie’s mother.

Life is certainly far from quiet in this rural village after-all, but I do miss London and my former, exciting life. I miss Michael, but don’t tell him that, he is conceited enough.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do your face?

The Service can be harsh, but I know now and again they bend the rules and allow someone with special skills back in, and I have those in abundance. You wouldn’t want to cross me – that is a fact.

Once Michael realised I was involved with looking into Ali’s disappearance, he warned me off, told me to keep out of it. Well, anyone who knows me – and he should know better – knows full well that warning me off is like a red rag to a bull. Luke telling me to back off is just music to my ears. I cannot stand being told not to do something, especially by a man!

Of course, I won’t back off. I am going to find Ali, investigate what is really going on with the Russians and the Ukrainians – I have my suspicions that a local Solicitor who has been involved romantically with Ali knows more than he is telling, and there may well be a link between him and the gang.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.  How do my readers get a copy of your book?

Sahara, many thanks for having me over to answer your questions. I hope your readers will din them interesting and will tempt them to read my writing.  ‘Ms Birdsong Investigates – first of a series – is not published yet. I hope it will come out next year. However, there is an extract from the novel in my short story collection, Undercover: Crime Shorts. I’ve called the extract, Undercover.

#Authorinterview with Karen J Mossman

Karen J Mossman

Author interview with Karen J Mossman

Today, it’s my pleasure to have Karen Mossman on my blog.  Welcome!  Smile

What inspired you to start writing?

My parents always fostered children. Mum preferred the under five age group. We took on a child long term, who effectively became my sibling too. In those days, the 60s and 70s, carers could have up to four children under the age of 5, not including their own. So regularly there was five of us, up to four foster children, plus the dogs and cats my mother liked to collect.

The first children came when I was two, so I grew up always having them there. When I got older, I entertained them by telling stories, usually making them up as I went along. By the time I reached my early teens, it was my escape to write stories for myself. To be away from the bedlam and noise of downstairs I took to my bedroom to write. There I could be anyone I wanted and go where ever my imagination took me

So, the inspiration to write came from the need to escape.

What’s your favorite book you’ve written and why?

At the time of writing, I love every book. When I look back at them, it is always with fondness and its hard to choose just one. I’ll go for Behind Closed Doors, solely because I set it in the 70s. I drew on my own teenage years and feelings for the main character. I also gave her an enhanced version of my first boyfriend. She lived in the area I lived in. She experienced all the fashion and the music from that era. It was such fun to write as I immersed myself back in time. At the moment I am rewriting it changing the viewpoint from first to third person.

What are the best and worst aspects of writing?

The best is the writing, pure writing, letting my fingers walk across the keyboard spilling out the story as it tumbles from my head. The worst is the editing. Having to analyse every single word, to break everything down, and read it as a reader would. Then having an editor point out the flaws! Ugh! They are usually right, but it hurts.

How do you balance marketing one book and writing the next?

Not very well!

Are you an Indie Author or are you part of a publishing house?

I’m proud to say I am both now. My new publisher has agreed to take my four novels, and my five novellas.

What do you enjoy most about being an author?

It seems everyone writes a book these days. I know many writers and feel just one little person in a crowd. Yet, in the real world I feel unique. When people find out I’m an author, they are impressed, and want to know more about what I do. I love that part. Some I feel like a celebratory.

Do you read books in the genre you write?

I’m a multi genre writer, so I try to write everything. However, I don’t like reading science fiction or horror. The latter because I’m a wimp, and sci/fi tend to have too many unpronounceable names for characters and places. This makes it hard to read when you can’t even say the main characters name!

When you’re not writing, what do you do to recharge?

Crafting! I love crafting and like my writing, I like to try a bit of everything. At the moment, I am really into crochet. I’ve been making hand bags and purses of late.

Besides being an author, do you have a second job?

No, I am happily retired.

What makes you laugh?

Not much really. I’ve never been into ‘modern comedy’ although I used to like the old time comics. What makes me laugh, almost always, is probably not very nice. Seeing someone trip up or stumble makes me giggle. I suppose its because I spent my life being clumsy, although I’m not so much anymore. To see someone else do it instead of me makes me laugh out loud.

What (not who) would you take to a lonely island?

My Kindle.

Who would you like to invite for dinner?

My Mum and Dad. They are not here any more and I’d love to talk about all the things we used to. I never wanted to ask a celeb to dinner, like most people say. I couldn’t think of anything worse.

Now, it’s time to meet one of your characters. Which book is your character from?

Definitely Joanna from Joanna’s Journey and Joanna’s Destiny.

Joanna's Journey (The Decade Series Book 2) by [Mossman, Karen J]  Joanna's Destiny (The Decade Series Book 3) by [Mossman, Karen J]

Who are you and what is your name?

My name is Joanna Nelson. Everyone tells me I’m a fiery character but I’m just a girl who just wants to love and be loved back. Instead I’m always fighting someone.

Are you a fictional or historical figure?

Fictional.

What should we know about you?

After going through such a lot in my life, I finally get the man of my dreams. Even though he is every other girl’s dream too, he belongs to me.

Tell us about your story. When and where is your tale set?

In eighties Manchester, where me, and my sister Sandie, grew up. She lives in London now. It was when I was going to visit her on the train that I first met Niko. He didn’t tell me who he was initially and I was really mad at him for letting me find out the way I did. But I soon forgave him. He was always the love of my life – elusive, and gorgeous!

What is your personal goal? What do you ultimately want?

In the eighties I thought I knew what I wanted, but I got let down very badly and then made bad choices. I didn’t handle it very well and let people down.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do your face?

By the time the nineties came along, I knew I’d made a big mistake. The answer to your question is my boyfriend, he’s my biggest conflict. Our friendship goes back long before we became a couple. I knew I had to leave him but it had to be amicably. Trouble was, he found it hard to forgive me. He felt betrayed and I know I let him down. I hurt a lot of people just to get what I wanted.

Karen, thank you so much for taking to time to answer my questions.  How do my readers connect you?

KARRIN: Warrior Child Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

KARRIN: Warrior Child: An Urban Fantasy , Sci-Fi Adventure (Excalibur Saga Book 3) by [Foley, Sahara]

KARRIN: Warrior Child Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

Image result for readers favorite logo

This year, I submitted Karrin: Warrior Child to the 2019 Readers Favorite book Awards.

You know what?

She didn’t win!!  Boohoo!!  Such a great story too.  But, thems the breaks.

The award has drawn so much attention, they had record breaking submissions again this year.  I guess I was really lucky to have won 4th and 5th place in 2016 for The Secret of Excalibur and It Lives in the Basement.

To celebrate my loss, and to award my fans and readers, I thought I’d do a giveaway.  Smile  Sound good?  Yeah, it does to me too.

Below is the 3rd chapter from Karrin: Warrior Child.  All you need do is tell me, in the comments, the name of the guard that burned Karrin’s feet.  Easy Peasy.  I do warn you though, this is a dark story , pulls no punches, and there is swearing.  I’m sure that’s one of the main reasons this story wasn’t even considered.  In this afraid to hurt anyone’s feelings society, this book wouldn’t stand a chance with oversensitive, liberal judges.

What about the prize, you ask?

Hmm, let me think.  How about 10 copies of the ebook to the winners.  And, the first 2 random winners I pick will also get a $25 Amazon Gift Card.  A person can only win once per giveaway, and entries must be received by September 15, 2019.

Good luck, and buying the ebook would be awesome too.  Ready?  Set?  Go!!!

Chapter THREE

The clanging of the cell door and a gruff voice yanked Karrin from a fitful slumber.  “Hey, Yol.  Looky here, you got yourself a roommate.”

Karrin rubbed the sleep from her eyes. An older girl with a shaved head stood in the room.

“Yes, Guard,” she mumbled, her brown eyes staring back at Karrin.

“You got the short straw. Too bad for you,” the guard mocked. With a mean laugh, she proceeded down the corridor, banging her electric prod on the closed cell doors.

Shoulders rounded in resignation, Yol stepped to the toilet, hitched up her dress, and sat. “Shit,” she groaned as she leaned forward and rested her elbows on her knees.  “What did I do?  Why’d they put a dummy in with me?”

Sighing heavily, she dropped her head in her hands.  “That means no sleep, and less food.” She spoke so softly Karrin barely made out the words.

Lying on her side, staring straight ahead, Karrin studied the older girl out of the corner of her eyes. Yol wore a blue dress with a white collar. Her bald head gleamed under the harsh lighting. Finished peeing, she punched a gray button on the wall to flush the commode.

The new cellmate sat on the empty bunk, hands between her scrawny knees, staring at Karrin.  Her pouting lips turned into a smirk when she discovered the growing bruise on the child’s cheek.  Yol’s smile widened when she noticed the burn marks on the younger girl’s foot, knee, and legs.

Leaning sideways, she made a big show of peering up and down the hallway.  She sat back and whispered, “I see you met Matron, retard.” One eyebrow quirked as she pointed at the blistered areas.  “Cassie been here, too.  She likes to leave her mark, the bloody, fucking cow.  Now, listen up, dummy. When dinner comes, I get your share, too.  You understand me, dimwit?”

Karrin didn’t answer. She lay unmoving, staring straight ahead, eyes unblinking.

“Crap,” Yol moaned.  “Hey, dummy, can you, at least, talk?”

Though her eyes burned from not blinking, Karrin laid motionless, her face expressionless.

“Fuck!  You’re not even a half-wit.  You’re a no-wit.  I bet all you do is eat and shit.”  Sliding off her bed, she leaned over Karrin, staring into her vacant eyes.

In a forced whisper, she hissed, “You’re nothing but trouble for me, you little retarded bitch! At least, I’ll get a shot at the Yacht or the Farm ’cause I be the best fifteen-year-old Heroin Processor in the sewers.  I even earn favors from guards.  But, you – you’ll end up in a Prison.”  A sly smile crossed her thin face.  “I been told they do all kinds of nasty things to retards in Prison.”

Laughing, she raised her hand, ready to slap Karrin across the face when she froze, brows knitted in thought.  “Why’d they put you with me?”  She sat back on her bed and nibbled on her thumbnail.

“Matron never sticks little bitches with us older ones.  So, one of us must be leaving.  Either you’re going with Cook, or…or they picked me for the Yacht.”  Her brown eyes lit up with excitement. “Yeah, that makes sense ’cause I’ll be turning sixteen in a few months.  Oh, I can’t wait to get out of this dump.”  Yol squeaked in delight, hugging herself.

Karrin lay still, trying not to draw attention, when she couldn’t help herself. She blinked.

“Ah ha, you’re not dead after all. At least, not yet.”  At the sound of squeaky wheels echoing down the hallway, the older girl’s head jerked up. Jumping to her feet, she ordered, “Stand up, stupid. Its dinner.”

Stomach grumbling, Karrin swung her legs over the side of the bed and sat, hands clasped in her lap.

A grating noise stopped and started, moving closer, until a cart halted in front of their barred doorway.  A woman as round as she was tall, long, greasy, brown hair stuck to the side of her face, glared with hard eyes at Karrin. She motioned toward the bald girl, and Yol stepped up to the metal bars.  “Who be the other girl?” she asked in a muffled voice.

Yol shrugged her thin shoulders as she peered sideways at her new cellmate.  “I’m not sure, Ginny.  I don’t think she can hear or talk.”

The guard leaned forward, talking softer. “I ain’t supposed to be atellin’ you this, but girl, you’re gonna be a leaving in a few days.”

Yol grabbed the cold bars and jumped up and down.  “I knew it. I knew it,” she squealed.  “As soon as I saw the retard, I knew I was going to the Yacht.  Am I?”

“Shush, girl!” the fat guard admonished as she nervously glanced up and down the corridor.  You ain’t sixteen, yet, Yol, so I ain’t sure. Let me do some checking.  Here, I got to get busy.” She slid one small, chrome tray through the horizontal slot in the bars, and took off, pushing the squeaking cart to the next cell.

Yol took their dinner and sat cross-legged on her bed, cradling the small tray in her lap. Their meal consisted of two pieces of white meat, a hunk of homemade bread, and some gooey stuff splattered in the center of the plate.

The smell of cooked food drifted toward Karrin, making her stomach growl. She hadn’t eaten in several days.

Yol stuffed a large chunk of bread in her mouth and chewed vigorously.  “You be getting a rat leg, and some of the rice, but the bread’s all mine.”  The bully grinned, showing yellow teeth, before pushing another morsel in her mouth.

The famished girl sat still, tiny hands pressed against her rumbling stomach.  Karrin never dealt with hunger before. Not since coming to this place. At least, not as far as she remembered. Even the Felney’s fed her, at least, once a day.

“Ummm.” Yol signed in pleasure and tore off a hunk of meat with her teeth.  “The rat tastes so good, today.”

She continued making oohing and ahhing noises until the tray was empty. With a smug look, she said, “Oh, I’m sorry, retard. I ate all our dinner.  You should’ve grabbed some when you had the chance. Here, you can chew on the bones.”  The mean girl waved a leg bone in the air, laughing maliciously.

Cruel laughter ringing in her ears, Karrin lay down, faced the gay wall, and curled into a ball.

A few minutes later the squeaky wheels returned and stopped at their cell.

Yol leaped off her bed and hurried toward the barred doorway.  “What did you find out, Ginny?” She held out the platter.

“Well, Yol, you be a goin’ to the Process Colony on the Island.” Her blue eyes gleamed with spite.

Yol’s mouth dropped, the silver platter hitting the concrete with a loud clang.  She backed away, hands held up, eyes wide with horror.  “No, No, that can’t be!” she wailed.

“What’s done, is done, girl.  Now, hand me the tray,” Ginny demanded.

Yol jumped to attention and retrieved the fallen plate from the floor.  “Yes, Guard,” she said and handed it through the bars.

With a curt nod, the obese guard turned away, pushing the noisy cart.

Ashen-faced, the girl plopped down on the hard bed, head in her hands.  “The Process Colony?  I don’t understand.”  She shook her head.  “They told me I be rewarded, not, not…” She broke down, sobbing as she rocked, back and forth.

Karrin felt helpless, not knowing what to do or say. As far as she could tell, any place had to be better than here.

After several minutes, Yol laid down and faced the gray wall, crying. When her sobs turned to soft snores, Karrin slid off the bed onto the ice-cold concrete floor. Her bladder was overflowing, but fear kept her from using the toilet. The bald girl was as mean as the guards, and she didn’t want to be hurt, again. She peered at the sleeping girl.

Look at her, now. She’s as scared as I am.

Karrin winced when she sat on the freezing metal rim of the commode.  The prod marks on her feet and knees burned like fire, so she bit her cheek to stop from crying.  She sniffled and swallowed the pain. Forcing it deep down inside, hiding it away with the loneliness and fear.

After flushing the toilet, she crept to her bed and lay down against the cold wall, eyes staring at Yol. The older girl flipped on her side and faced Karrin.

Hands tucked under her head, tears shimmering in her eyes, Yolanda said, “I don’t know if;n you understand me, retard, but if’n you get the chance to run – run!  A few girls have escaped outta here.” She sighed.  “I don’t remember anyplace, but the Home.  I was about your age when I got here.  I did everything they asked me to do. Look where that got me.”

She turned on her back and wiped the tears from her eyes.  “I sweated in them sewers.  I learned to mix and cook and process every kind of shit they got down there.  I’m the BEST with the synthetic Heroin.  They told us if’n we worked hard, we’d get rewarded.  They promised.”  She beat her fist against the concrete wall, teeth gritted in anger and betrayal.

“I been lookin’ forward to gettin’ outta here, hoping it’d be the Yacht.   From what we’d been told, going to the Yacht be like going to heaven.  Can you imagine sailing anywhere you wanted?  No more walls, or sewer, or Guards – nothin’, but open sky and water. It’s the closest I’d ever get to bein’ free.”

Yolanda turned her head, her sorrowful eyes staring at Karrin.  “They might as well as kill me if’n I’m goin’ to the Process Colony.  It’s owned by the Warden, on an island by what used to be, called Cuba.  No one lives very long there.”

The distraught girl wiped her nose on her arm. “You know what they do to you?  Not only do the workers make all the poisonous chemicals that are sent here, but they’re also used for testing.   There are terrible stories of how some of the girls have died.”

Her blue eyes widened in dawning horror.  “If’n the drugs don’t kill us, the guards will. They be all men, and they be allowed to use us any way they want.  If’n I don’t get kilt in the first year, I’ll probably end up pregnant.  You know what they do to pregnant girls?  They be thrown in the testing labs.”

The distressed girl started sobbing, again.  “You be lookin’ at a dead person.  Shit!  The fucking Processing Colony!”  She rolled on her side and faced the wall, her body shaking as she wailed out her misfortune.

Teeth chattering, Karrin curled into a ball and thought about Yol’s plight. What’s a Processing Colony or Heroin? What happens there? Is it worse than this place? The little girl shuddered, but not from the cold.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, but her cellmate had already cried herself to sleep.

An hour later, Karrin drifted off, to be woken by the jolt of an electric prod.  Without thinking, she screamed in pain, which rewarded her with another jab to her feet.

“Got you good, dimwit,” snickered a short, Hispanic guard as she strolled past their barred door, patting her rod.

Once the guard disappeared down the corridor, Yol sat up and wrapped her arms around her legs. “Since you be the new retard on the block, you be easy pickings for the guards.  If’n you hear footsteps, get your ass ready.  They be comin’ for you. Since you also be an unwanted, they can’t get rid of you, in case your parents want you back.  Otherwise, Matron might lock you in with her boys.”

The six-year-old child shrugged, not understanding the implications of being locked up with boys.

Yol huffed in exasperation. “You don’t know. Some of the girls who do the cleanup in the mornings said when a girl gets locked up with them, all that’s left are pieces of bodies. So, you be lucky your family didn’t want you.  You got, at least, six months before you be fair game.  And, don’t be acting too crazy, or you be endin’ up in the incinerator, alive.”  She shuddered.  “I don’t know what be worse – bein’ torn apart or bein’ burned alive.”

Horrific images of being incinerated alive kept Karrin awake the rest of the night. She laid huddled on her cold bed, ears straining for any sound of footsteps coming down the hallway.

Three more times different guards paid a visit to her cell and slapped prods on her feet.  Each time, Karrin gritted her teeth and clutched her oversized dress as her body shook from the electric current. She never made a noise.  Not even a whimper.

One guard became so angry, she jabbed Karrin, over and over, until her battery pack went dead.  Calling her names, which the little girl never heard before, the furious tormentor stomped off down the corridor.

The fifth time footsteps came up the hallway, Karrin squeezed her eyes closed and tensed up for the jarring pain. Nothing happened. Instead, the door clanged open and a loud voice boomed out, “Karen 1685, stand up.”

Karrin jumped off the bed and stared up at the tallest, most muscle-bound woman she’d ever seen.  Heart pounding in her chest, she felt like a mouse about to be trampled by an elephant.

Hands on hips, the guard scowled down at her, bushy eyebrows a single line across her forehead. “Well?  We ain’t got all day.  Put them shoes on.”

She shook her massive head, snorting.  “Why’d they give me a fecking retard?  You earn your keep or you’ll be a part of dinner, you understand?  Now, put them shoes on and MOVE!”

Grimacing, Karrin quickly slipped her burnt feet into the little rubber thongs.

The mammoth woman grabbed her bony arm and yanked her out the doorway.

Eyes filled with pity, Yol muttered, “COOK.  Oh, fuck. You be as dead as me.”
