JANUARY 2019 Multi-Genres Discounted and Free Ebooks–1st to the 15th

Pf, Pf2019, Pf 2019, New Year

WOW! We made it another year. Congratulations. 🙂

In my neck of the woods, Old Man Winter showed up just in time to give us a bitter start to the New Year. BRRRR!

I’ve got another batch of fantastic book deals for you this month. You’ll notice We Journey No More will be on 99 cent sale from 01–03-19 to 01-09-19. *Hint Hint* If you haven’t read this excellent story, now would be the time to grab your copy. It won’t be on sale again for the rest of the year.

I’m also in the process of changing the book cover. I love the current one as it depicts Dal and his stead Nema, but it just doesn’t sell books. Sigh.

As for Karrin: Warrior Woman, I’m diligently working on the last draft, and we plan for it to be released in February.

Then it’s on to a new series. A post-apocalyptic one, loosely called Max Ryder. This was another one of my late husband’s stories that I loved. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.

Bye for now, and have a wonderful start to 2019.

Author Interview with C.C. Dowling

Author Interview with C.C. Dowling

Today, I’d like to introduce C.C. Dowling to my blog.  She writes gritty urban fantasy and paranormal sci-fi.  Welcome!

Who is C.C. Dowling?  What inspired you to start writing?

I’ve wanted to write since I was a child. I started out writing poetry, short stories, and music lyrics.

What’s your favorite book you’ve written and why?

The Infinity Series is easily my favorite thing I’ve written so far. The first book in that series, Conduit, is the one that kicked it all off for me. It was my first official book published and was a concept and passion five years in the making.

Conduit (The Infinity Series Book 1) by [Dowling, C.C.]

What are the best and worst aspects of writing?

I think this answer depends on where an author is in the process when they answer the question. In my opinion, the best aspects are writing “The End” and when you hit PUBLISH! I would also say that it’s inspiring and encouraging when a reader leaves a review that tells you what you’ve written has touched them in some way.

The toughest aspects are self-doubt. Comparing your career to others. And malicious people willing to hurt your career and confidence with harmful reviews and actions.

How do you balance marketing one book and writing the next?

Oh, man. I don’t know. If you have the answer, please, for the love, share it! I remind myself that I am doing all I can and that I know there’s room for improvement. When I can do it, I improve. When I’m unable, I accept what I can do. Celebrate my wins.

Are you an Indie Author or are you part of a publishing house?

I’m a hybrid, but mostly I self-publish.

What do you enjoy most about being an author?

That I get to explore the human condition through the power of language.

Do read books in the genre you write?

Isn’t that an unspoken requirement? 🙂

When you’re not writing, what do you do to recharge?

I have some of the most amazing friends and community that I get to be myself with. That I get to love and support, and who do the same for me. Life is hard. It’s amazing, and short, and beautiful, and messy. I get to be all of that with them.

Besides being an author, do you have a second job?

I have a first job. A day job, which I actually love. Also, I’m a mom, wife, and dragon trainer.

What makes you laugh?

Comedy. Tickling my children. A good joke. The joy and happiness of those I love.

What (not who) would you take to a lonely island?

The internet and a way to access it.

Who would you like to invite for dinner?

Can I raise the dead? Cause, if so, I’d have my Memaw over for dinner. I would give almost anything for one more day with her.

And while I have the powers of necromancy, I’d also raise my sister. Let her meet her niece and nephew, let her see the family. Make sure she knows how much we miss her.

It’s time to meet one of your characters.  Which book is your character from?

Hi, I’m Liv. I’ll take over from here. I’m the main character in Mana, Book 2 of the Infinity Series

Who are you and what is your name?

As I said, I’m Liv. But my full name is Vivienne Imogene Hartley. Well, that’s my name in this lifetime, anyway.

Are you a fictional or historical figure?

Wow. Really? You wanna know if I’m real or fake? Isn’t that like asking a woman how old she is? Rude.

What should we know about you?

That I’m dead. Well, no. I’m not dead. Not anymore. I did die, though. Now I’m a Conduit. I reap souls for the Otherworld, deliver messages to demons, and try to keep my caseworker happy.

Tell us about your story.  When and where is your tale set?

Mana is set in modern-day Fallbrook California—a quaint town north of San Diego that’s triple-digit hot in the summer, greener than a desert has a right to be, and is just the right mix of Mayberry meets Berkeley.

Mana takes place about two months after the conclusion of Conduit. The ghosts from my past chase me hard. I can’t escape them, just like I can’t escape my mistakes or the stalker angel intent on making me his. It’s a proposal I resist, at first. But after a mission goes wrong, and those I trust stab me in the back, the only place left to turn is to my angel. To the only place that feels safe. Problem is, absolutely nothing is as it seems, and the price of that safety might mean the death of me. Again.

What is your personal goal?  What do you ultimately want?

Before I died, all I wanted was to be noticed. Now, it’s all I can do to blend in when everything about me and my life as a Conduit stands out.

If I want to get real honest, dig deep, I’d say what I crave most is the self-esteem to love myself enough. To be enough, despite what others would have me believe.

What is standing in your way?  What conflict(s) do you face?

I am my own worst enemy. Sure, there are plenty in my world who look to take advantage. Ultimately, I’m the one who causes myself the most harm. I refuse to see what’s in front of me, insist on living life in blinders, cling to the naivete that all is sunshine and roses.

C.C., thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.  I will let my readers know which Mana has been released.

In the meantime, how do they connect with you?

Conduit (The Infinity Series Book 1) by [Dowling, C.C.]

When college senior Jane Lamb dies suddenly, she discovers that the afterlife is less pearly gates and fluffy clouds and more standing in line at the DMV. But before she can spend eternity lamenting over her short, unremarkable life, she’s offered a do-over—as a Conduit, a reincarnated messenger contracted to reap souls.

Determined to do things right the second time, Jane takes the job and reincarnates as eighteen-year-old college freshman Liv Hartley. Only, the excitement for her new life doesn’t last. There are consequences to bearing the coveted infinity symbol tattoo marking her as a Conduit, and Liv quickly finds that getting a second chance doesn’t mean getting a better one. Possessive demons, stolen assignments, and a love life that’s decidedly complicated are all a far cry from the mundane existence Jane led. But with more questions piling up than bodies, there’s only one thing Liv knows for sure: life doesn’t get any easier after death.

Filled with sparkling wit, conflicted romance, and more spirit than a haunted mansion, Conduit is a fun-filled paranormal that explores the idea of regret, love, and what we would give to live twice.

Cover Reveal of KARRIN Warrior Woman and Chapter Excerpt

Cover Reveal of KARRIN Warrior Woman

I know I don’t keep my readers as up-to-date as I should on my published books and the ones I’m working on here.  I’ve had several people ask me when Karrin: Warrior Woman would be available.

I had hoped to have the last book done in January 2019, but my real job gets crazy during November and December and it’s just now settling down.  Taking over 100 calls a day just sapped the energy right out of me and working on my books wasn’t in the picture.  But, I’m all gung-ho again, and with days off during the Holidays, I am really shooting to get KWW done in January and to my editor by February.  Maybe, sooner.  *crossing fingers*.

To tied you over, here’s the cover reveal for KARRIN: Warrior Woman.  What do you think?  Like? Dislike?  Does it make you want to read the book?

KARRIN WARRIOR WOMAN EBOOK

Karrin: Warrior Child left everyone on sort of a cliffhanger. Did Karrin survive her first winter?  What or who was Brownie?  Where did he come from?  What really happened to Lurga?  Unfortunately, you’ll have to read the book to get most of the questions answered.  BUT, I can share with you the unedited version of Chapter One.  It’s 2,662 words. Ready? Let me know what you think in the comments.  I really want your feedback.  Thank you.

Chapter One

“No, Brownie,” admonished a frustrated young woman as, once again, the monkey jerked his line out of the water.  “I told you, you have to wait.  You can’t keep pulling it out of the water.  You’ll never catch any fish that way.”

Brownie glared at her, chittering in anger as he threw his wooden pole to the ground.

Three years ago, the monkey showed up in the blinding snowstorm.  Brownie proved to be an intelligent creature, and Karrin taught him a lot of tricks.  However, he was plain stupid when it came to fishing. He just didn’t have the patience.

She huffed as she ran her hand through her long, dark, auburn hair.  Spring finally got to her side of Switch.  All winter, Karrin looked forward to her first fishing trip, and now, Brownie was ruining her enjoyment.

Karrin fumed as she sat cross-legged along the bank of the stream, fiddling with her pole.  It was also three years since Lurga’s silver fighter showed up with another Ispepyein warrior flying it.  The third spring since she gave up all hope Lurga Pukani was alive.

In those three seasons, with her new friend/pet by her side, Karrin learned to adapt.  The cave she lived in when Brownie arrived, turned silver from all the Lear ore she kept stashed inside.  Always nervous around the silver metal, Brownie quit coming into the cavern, so she had to find a different one.  But, she had to admit, the recent one was bigger and warmer.

Over the years, Karrin also practiced with her limited powers.  She found that with her mind, she could cut cured furs into thin strips that ended up looking like tough string.  So, when Lurga’s heavy net rotted away, she replaced it with a lighter, easier one for her to use.

And, if she concentrated hard enough, she ‘sensed’ the other animals living around her.  She also figured out how to call them to her.  Instead of setting up snares, she would bring them to her, mentally paralyze them, and knock them on the head with a wooden bat. For some reason, though, that ability didn’t work on fish, so, here she sat, trying to catch dinner.

The young woman leaned back on her hands, eyes closed, face tipped to the bluish sun, savoring the warmth on her skin.  Birds twittered in the trees, and fish splashed in the water.  She smiled to herself.  The winter had been long and hard.  Thanks to Brownie, he’d shown her edible nuts and berries even Lurga didn’t know.  Between Brownie’s foraging and her hunting, they had enough food to live on.  She would never get fat living free off the land, but she wouldn’t starve either.

A shadow flickered across her eyelids.  Her eyes snapped open as she jerked to a standing position.  She ducked under a tree and shielded her eyes with a hand as she scanned the cloudless sky.  Shortly after Tatum took off with Lurga’s fighter, spacecraft started appearing around Switch.  Some of them Karrin identified as Ispepyein fighters, and a few were the round, domed Calen ships, but some she didn’t recognize.

The Ispepyein and Calen ships frightened her, but the black giant-sized ones scared the hell out of her.  Every time one of those passed overhead, she became so weak, she could hardly breathe or move.  She was sure Tatum told someone about her, and one day, they would come for her.

You haven’t seen a spaceship in two years, she scolded herself. Why are you still so jumpy?  That was a good question.  The vessels may have disappeared, but every once in a while, she’d get these creepy sensations like someone was watching her, spying on her.  Every time, she would turn around, looking for something, but never found anything.  Brownie always looked at her like she was crazy.  Maybe she was.

Karrin sighed as she swept back long strands of hair off her face, annoyed with herself she forgot to put it up this morning.  Seeing a thin twig on the ground, she wound her hair around it into a bun.  Good.  Now I don’t have to worry about it being in my face all day.

Part of the reason for her grumpiness was IT started again, marking its arrival with the now familiar low cramps and blood on her legs.  Karrin sat down cross-legged and shifted around in discomfort.  The thick pads she wore to stop the blood from staining her clothes felt unyielding and awkward.  She still didn’t understand what IT was all about.  Maybe her body had too much blood and was trying to get rid of it.  IT had barely started when Lurga disappeared, so she had no one to talk to about her problem.  What she remembered from the Contruda was confusing and didn’t pertain to Humans.

Karrin also noticed when IT showed up, she got paranoid.  That’s when her abilities were the most powerful.  IT seemed to affect Brownie too as he would scamper off and hide when she bled.  Sometimes she wouldn’t see her friend for days.  Angry at her body and life in general, she picked up a rock and flung it into the water, venting her frustrations.

Brownie’s loud chattering brought her out of her misery.  He stood next to her, holding out his pole.  Karrin took it from him.  By the twitching of his tails and the wrinkling of his nose, she realized he was getting ready to take off again.

“Fine.  Go,” the irate woman said in a huff.  “Leave me alone.  I don’t care.  I won’t miss you either.”  However, she knew she was lying.

When her friend did his monthly disappearing act, loneliness overwhelmed her, as if no one cared about her.  Her cave became bigger and empty, and she found it hard to get up in the mornings.  What did it matter?  I have nowhere to go?  Still, she managed to keep going until he returned.

Her greatest fear was that one day Brownie wouldn’t come back. What would I do then? She didn’t like thinking about the possibility of being truly alone, so she pushed that fear to the back of her mind.  Sometimes it worked, most times it didn’t.

Brownie scampered off on four legs into the woods, in the same direction he went every time.  Karrin followed him once before but couldn’t catch up.  She ran, and walked, for several days.  She even spent a chilly night in a desert and then wound up in some steep hills.  It was from that advantage point she glimpsed a vast lake in the distance.  By the time she made it to the bottom of the first hill, Brownie had run past her, chittering and chattering, headed for home.  Exhausted and unprepared for the long trek, she gave up and followed him back.

However, she always wanted to know where Brownie went because sometimes, he carted or drug stuff back with him.  One time he came back carrying a thin, cloth blanket which reminded her of Lurga’s blankets.  Another time, her friend brought mesh clothing too big for her then but fit her perfectly now, and she wore daily.  Once he showed up with a belt and shiny knife.  The dagger wasn’t silver, but chrome, and never needed sharpening.  They became a permanent fixture of her attire.

Why not follow him today?  This time I’ll be better prepared, and I won’t give up until I find where Brownie’s going.

Suddenly having a purpose, she pulled in her line and leaned both poles against a nearby tree. Karrin picked up the few fish they already caught and ran the short distance back to the cave.  After cleaning them, she wrapped them and some other cured meat into a bundle with her blanket.  In the areas she was familiar with, she would forage berries and nuts along the way.  The parts of Switch she’d never seen before worried her, not knowing what food sources would be available.

She also needed water.  Grabbing a flask of water, Karrin slung it over her shoulder, followed by her bow and arrows.  She didn’t know how useful the bow would be as no matter how much she practiced, she couldn’t hit anything over twenty feet away.  Still, having it with her made her feel safe.  Hefting her wooden club on her shoulder, she stepped outside and briskly walked the way Brownie disappeared into the woods.

The first night Karrin spent in a rock cave, with a small silver fire to keep her warm.  The next day, she picked berries as she traveled until she crossed into the desert.  She journeyed uneventfully, then stopped for the night. Unable to find any shelter, she lit a small fire and curled up in her blanket, the cold air nipping at her nose.  She just fell into a weary sleep when she heard movement and scraping on the rocks.

Snatching her club, she sat up and peered around.  The grinding noise happened again, louder and nearer.  Tightening her grip on the handle, ready to smash whatever came into view, Brownie scampered from behind a boulder, dragging a heavy, long sword.

Karrin dropped her weapon, signing in relief.  “It’s only you.  You scared me, silly.  Come over here and show me what you have.”

Leaving deep gouges in the soft dirt, Brownie drug it over to her, and left it by her side.  He squatted and stared at her as he chittered away.  He was trying to tell her something, but Karrin never understood his gibberish.

“Why, this looks just like the knife you brought back.” Karrin ran her fingertips over the engravings on the sword.  “See, it has the same markings on the blade.  I wonder what they mean.”

Getting no answers from her friend, she got up and patrolled the perimeter of the camp, to make sure something else didn’t lurk in the dark.  Everything Brownie carried back so far indicated people lived on Switch somewhere, and he was stealing from them.  She would find them, no matter how long it took.  Confirming nothing menacing hung out in the darkness, she returned to the fire and lay down.  Excited about meeting people for the first time in several years, she fell asleep, curled around Brownie for warmth.

Karrin traveled at a fast pace for five days before starting up a long, steep slope she knew laid between her and the lake.  That night when she camped, she smelt a hint of water on the breeze. But, it didn’t remind her of lake water. She sniffed the air again.  Saltwater like an ocean, but still different somehow.  Whatever it was, she would find out in the morning.

When Karrin awoke on the sixth day, Brownie was gone.  Frantic with worry, she searched around until she found his tracks in the fresh dew lying on the long grass.  His footprints headed toward the reservoir.  Putting out the fire, and then gathering her stuff, she followed them.  By mid-day, after scrambling up a steep, sandy hill, she stood on the top catching her breath.  She froze in place as her heart jumped into her throat.

The vertical bluff led down to an enormous lake where massive waves crashed ashore.  Close to the shoreline, partially buried in the sand, sat one of the fearful, giant-sized, black ships.

Karrin dropped to her belly.  Lurga’s teachings echoed in her head about being highlighted against the skyline from an opponent’s lower position.  She crawled to the edge, hid behind some thin weeds, and peered down.  As she studied the lay of the land, she realized a high-velocity impact caused the steep hill she’d climbed. The alien ship stuck like an arrow in the middle.  If only I were that accurate with my bow, she mused.

She watched for several minutes.  All she saw were the numerous tracks from her wayward friend, coming and going, and birds wheeling and diving overhead.  A slight movement caused her to shift her gaze to the right.  A slight figure came from around the lake-side of the ship.  It was Brownie, dragging something behind him.

Shaking her head at his penchant for thievery and apparent lack of security, Karrin proceeded down the sheer cliff, sliding on her butt most of the way.  She was making too much noise as sand, and small rocks tumbled down the slope with her.  Unfortunately, she had no choice.  Not being as nimble as her four-legged friend.

Once she came to a dusty stop at the bottom, Karrin notched an arrow in her bow and scanned the area for any trouble.  Seeing none, she advanced toward Brownie and the half-buried spacecraft.  The closer she got, the more the immense size overwhelmed her.

“Wow,” she mumbled as she craned her neck to look up at the black alien ship.  Scorch marks marred most of the hull, some with large, ragged, round holes in the middle.  “I wonder what happened.”

Brownie chirped at her, dropped his prize, and clambered up her legs and body until he was sitting on her shoulder, his tails curled around her neck.  “What did you steal this time, you little thief?” Karrin scolded.  Next to her feet sat a brown and chrome rifle with a glass barrel and a plastic shoulder strap.

Karrin picked it up, avoiding the buttons on the sides.  Unlike the sword, it was unexpectedly heavy, and she almost dropped it.  Even though she didn’t know how to use the weapon, she didn’t want to leave such a prized possession behind, so she slung it on her unoccupied shoulder.

Firmly gripping her bow, she crept along the side of the ship, following Brownie’s footprints.  The sun glared down on her, the rays bounced off the ebony-colored vessel, making her break out in sweat.  She wiped dripping perspiration from her brow, wishing for a headband.  Constantly scanning the area before and behind her, all she saw were the small tracks left by Brownie in the soft sand which disappeared in the waves washing ashore.

Taking a few more steps, Karrin paused when a ten-foot wide, jagged, hole loomed in front of her.  She squatted and peered around more.  Seeing nothing amiss, she laid down the heavy rifle, dropped her pack, the sword, and her bow.  Tightly gripping the knife, she peeked inside.  Inside was gloomy and stunk of mildew and rotting seaweed from the incoming tides.  Karrin wrinkled her nose at the unpleasant smell.

Brownie chittered in her ear, pointed inside, and rubbed his furry cheek against hers, while he purred.  “I guess that means you want me to go inside.”  He nodded, grinning at her.  “Not yet, okay?”  Eyes adjusted to the dim lighting, a metal grate she took as a floor, ran at a steep angle into the darkness.

She squatted by her pack and rummaged in it until she found a small piece of silver ore.  Taking it out, she dropped it into the deep, black hole.  The rock pinked and clunked as it bounced off objects she couldn’t see.  After a few seconds, the noise stopped with a sharp, echoing thunk.   Jabbering away with excitement, Brownie leaped off her shoulder, landed on a metal beam, and scampered into the dark pit.  His chittering and chattering faded as he raced toward the bottom of the ship then grew louder as he popped up next to her, holding out the silver nugget.

Karrin took it from him and rubbed his soft, furry head.  She peered into the void again.  “What’s down there, Brownie?  Is there anyone alive or any dead bodies lying around?”

Brownie stared at her with his glittering black eyes, quivered his nose at her, jumped back into the spacecraft, and disappeared.  Karrin sighed as she stood gazing apprehensively down the hole.  She was curious to see what the ship contained but didn’t look forward to running across any gory remains.  Clutching her knife tighter, she followed her companion inside.

Author Interview with Troy A. Hill

Troy A. Hill

I haven’t done one of these segments for over a year.  Youza! Time flies and all that crap.  LOL.

Author Interview with Troy A. Hill

Who is Troy A Hill name? What inspired you to start writing?

Cliché answer: I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was in middle school.

One of my early influences was Robert A. Heinlein. When I was growing up in the 1970s, I wrote him a letter stating my love of his young adult books, and how I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I was excited beyond belief when a reply showed up in my mailbox a couple of months later. Signed by the big man himself. Bob Heinlein.

Of course, years flew by before I learned this his wife Ginny handled all of his correspondence. She signed the letter. But still, to have been on his list of replies.

What’s your favorite book you’ve written and why?

That’s a tie. Penteulu Emlyn’s Story and A Blink of an Eye (Cup of Blood Book 3).’

Penteulu Emlyn's Story: A Tale of the Penllyn Chronicles by [Hill, Troy A.]  A Blink of an Eye: Dark Fantasy in Post Arthurian Britain (A Cup of Blood Book 3) by [Hill, Troy A.]

Penteulu Emlyn’s Story really helped me find Emlyn’s character. Emlyn is a critical piece of the Cup of Blood series and I needed to understand him, know who he was and how he had been shaped that way. Since I already had Cup book 1 and part of book 2 done, before I wrote Penteulu, I knew of Emlyn, but not how he came to be so dark. When I dug into his brother’s story in Penllyn Bleddyn’s story, written a month before Emlyn, I found a fun, jovial, mirthful young man named Neirin. Not the hardened, dark, protector of Penllyn that haunted the pages of the Cup series. I had to know what and how Emlyn came out of young Neirin.

In Blink I got to tie together all of the plotting and twisting I had been laying out. I asked my beta readers to send me a one sentence summary of how they felt, or what they thought of the capstone of the trilogy. The first two responses I received were “Bloody Awesome!” and “touched me deeply in the feels…”

Before that, when I was going through the final edits after my editor had given me her feedback, I went through about half a box of tissues myself. Maria, Gwen, Emlyn, Enid … these were my friend, my family. I wanted the readers to feel their joy, their pain, and to come out the other side of the story touched by all they had sacrificed to protect what they love. Each other.

What are the best and worst aspects of writing?

Both at once: Going through all of those tissues. I still tear up when I re-read the “feels” parts of the books. These characters live in my head. That old idea that authors can hear their characters is real. As I write a scene, I can tell when something is off.

Early on in Cup of Blood (Book 1) I knew I needed to show how bad the Witch Hunters were. How low they began on the morality compass. But every time I came up with a depraved act for them to commit, Maria would pop up in my head. “No! Not the children. Let them harm me, not the innocent…”

I tried to let the despicable Witchers have their way with several young women, taking not asking. Maria was there in my head again. “No, not others. I’ll take it. There will be hell to pay afterwards, though…” What we ended up with wasn’t a rape scene, but was heavily threatening. And, I learned then just what happens when the bad guys piss off a six-hundred year old vampire.

A Cup of Blood: Dark Fantasy in Post Arthurian Britain by [Hill, Troy A.]

How do you balance marketing one book and writing the next?

Write in the morning. Sometimes in the evening. In between, do everything else.

Are you an Indie Author or are you part of a publishing house?

Indie, but I hope to grow my own publishing imprint, TH Media.

What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Freedom to let my imagination run wild.

Do you read books in the genre you write?

Of course. But, Arthurian Fantasy is a part of so many genres. I tag my books as “Arthurian Dark Urban Fantasy” with thriller elements. Even though they are not in the Romance genre, there is a touch of steamy romance.

I typically read Urban and Epic fantasy, anything with paranormal elements is potential (not much in Romance, though).

Although I got out of the habit of reading fiction when I worked on my Masters degree. I had several years of reading scholarly non-fiction, and long-form journalism. It’s taken a while to get back into reading for pleasure.

When you’re not writing, what do you do to recharge?

What I’m doing now… sitting on the aft end of a cruise ship watching the ocean go by. When I’m in Los Angeles, and need a break, I head down to the Santa Monica pier – where I moonlight/volunteer as a history docent. I love to sit on the pier and people watch, or stare out at the waves.

Besides being an author, do you have a second job?

Just the docent gig. I’ve got about three hours of stories about the history of the Pier I can tell you…

What makes you laugh?

Almost anything, but I love British comedy.

What (not who) would you take to a lonely island?

A huge stack of books, and a sword.

Who would you like to invite for dinner?

My grandfather. Thirty years after he passed, I’d love to have one more long conversation with him. I was too young to recognize his wisdom when he died. Now, I’d like to talk to him and have the conversations at an adult level.

It’s time to meet one of your characters. Which book is your character from?

The Cup of Blood series

A Cup of Blood: Dark Fantasy in Post Arthurian Britain by [Hill, Troy A.]

Who are you and what is your name?

Maria, of Rome

Are you a fictional or historical figure?

In your world, I’m a figment of Troy’s imagination.

What should we know about you?

I am what you would call a vampire. In my time, we called ourselves “Children of the Night.” I was born as Rome descended into Civil War between Octavius and Marc Antony. I died when Augustus wore the purple. All I have ever wanted was a quiet life, people to love, and to live in peace.

Tell us about your story. When and where is your tale set?

I died in my master’s arms in Rome. I drank his blood that night. I rose three nights later as undead. But my tale begins six centuries later.

The Witch Hunters, a zealous guild sanctioned by the Holy Roman Church, seek to wipe out all they deem unholy. They know of we Children of the Night. They call us “Blood Witches.” Francia is no longer safe for me. The Witchers have tracked me down several times. I learn they are seeking me again. So I flee to the west. To the edge of the known world. Britannia.

Arthur has been dead for a century. Mercia is one of the dominant powers in the Anglo-Saxon lands.

There I want to find a place to call home. But… I learn that my enemies are here too… But I have unexpected allies. Getting noticed by an ancient Celtic Goddess can make a girl feel special. Even an undead girl like me.

And, who is this mysterious druidess the goddess sends to aid me? Who is the regal Lady Gwen? Why am I so drawn to her?

What is your personal goal? What do you ultimately want?

Love, safety.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do your face?

The Witch Hunters. They’re out to kill me, and any who aid me. Including Gwen and the friends I make in Penllyn. I’d rather run from the Witchers than place those I love in jeopardy.

Troy, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.  I wish you the best of luck in your author career.  Readers can find you at?

Readers’ Favorite 5 Star Review of KARRIN: WARRIOR CHILD

KARRIN WARRIOR CHILD EBOOK

I recently sent my latest book, Karrin: Warrior Child, to Readers’ Favorite for a review.  Actually, I paid for three and only got one back so far.  They are a great sounding board to really see if our books are as good as we like to think they are.  LOL.

Anyway, the first review was 5 stars.  WOOHOO!  YIPPEE!  If one of the two remaining ones come back a 5 star, I will be entering Karrin in their 2019 book contest.  Two of my books placed in 2016.  Now, I want the GOLD!

5star-flat-web

Five Star Review by Faridah Nassozi

In Karrin: Warrior Child (Excalibur Saga Book 3) by Sahara Foley, Karrin was delivered to the Home marked as an unwanted and a retard, which was the worst position to be in. Soon the young girl, with no knowledge of her past, discovered that the Home was a wicked place where the kids were treated worse than criminals in a maximum security prison. Luck, however, found her when she was immediately assigned to the kitchen where Cook took an instant liking to her. Something about the little girl told Cook that she was no retard and she was special. Cook felt a strong need to protect the girl at all costs. However, there were powerful enemies searching for her and they would do anything to put an end to her existence. Heartbreaking sacrifices will have to be made to ensure her safety and guide her to her destiny.

Sahara Foley crafted one hell of a story and brought it to life vividly. The dystopian setting of the Home was very gut-wrenching but it was necessary. Seeing what was supposed to be a safe haven for the kids turning out to be hell broke my heart but even more because of the realization that the setting imitated conditions in the real-life foster care system, especially in group homes. The character development in the story is commendable. The different residents in the Home added a layer of intrigue and suspense, as did the different planets and their inhabitants. Karrin is unlike any other character I have encountered before; she is surreal and yet completely believable. I could easily picture her with a look of defiance in her eyes.

New Release Envy (A Protectors of the Elemental Magic Book 4) by Marnie Cate

ENVY

New Release Envy (A Protectors of the Elemental Magic Book 4) by Marnie Cate

BLURB:

THE DARKNESS IS REVEALED

My mother sold her soul to the Goddess of Winter, and mine along with it.

Camille was one of four girls given the gift of elemental magic. When her arrogance and greed led her to bad choices, she paid for it with her life… and her daughter, Blanche’s.

Blanche Kingston Drygen would never be admired for her sweetness. Lusted after for her beauty, and desired for her wealth, the townsfolk of Starten thought of her as a cold-hearted business woman. They did not know the secrets the most predominant family in town hid. The Drygens owned everything and almost everyone, except their own fates.

If you are hoping for a sweet, cozy tale, I’m afraid the Silvers have the market on fairytales. While they reveled in the gifts bestowed upon them by the Goddess Danu, the Drygen family fell victim to the cruel Winter Goddess, Snowystra.

Blanche’s story is one of lost love and tortured lives. Sit back as she tells you the reality of her gift, and how the Drygens were cursed to never love.

THE AUTHOR:

Marnie Cate

Marnie Cate is a writer of coming of age and urban fantasy novels. Born in an Irish mining town in Montana, she always had a flair for the dramatic and a vivid imagination, and spent her childhood lost in the elaborate worlds she created with the help of her dolls.

One day Marnie Cate was struck by a powerful image in her mind. This seed created the world of Starten and the complicated world of goddesses and their touch on the mortal world.

Inspired by the actress Dame Judi Dench, she pursued her dream of sharing the stories that were brewing in her mind. With the urging of friends and family, she wrote in every spare moment she had.

After countless weekends spent at the local coffee shop typing away and people watching, Marnie finished her first novel, Remember: Protectors of the Elemental Magic. With the world of elemental magic and the humans they lived in released, the stories have just begun.

In addition to the Protectors series, Marnie has written her first women’s literature book, Chasing Caitlyn.  This story dives into the hard subject of how life’s pain shapes us and how we can break that mold.

When not writing, Marnie enjoys reading, coffee and spending time with her family. She lives in Arizona.
