Inertia by Mark Everglade

An ecological crisis of epic proportions by critically acclaimed author, Mark Everglade

Released and published by Rockhill Publishing / The book is available worldwide in paperback and e-format

As a planet spins out of control, a young geophysicist, Ash, and her father must solve the ecological crisis using the latest cybernetics, while evading an oppressive regime profiting off the destruction.

Gliese 581g is the last remaining colony of the human race, located twenty light years from Earth. The planet was once tidal locked to its sun, with one side draped in darkness and the other half always bright. This changed after a radical group called O.A.K. increased the planet’s rotation to bring daylight cycles to all in the name of equality. All was not well, however, as decades passed, and new generations dealt with continual floods as the newfound sunlight melted the icecaps. Entire neighborhoods went aquatic from rising sea levels.

Soon, the planet was spinning out of control, with sunrises occurring every few hours.

Ash Rivenshear works as a geophysicist at Geosturm, a company contracted by the New Order to monitor the geological crisis. As she investigates the planet’s increasing rotation, she uncovers classified data indicating that someone is intentionally manipulating it to their own ends. An attack on her life is made to cover up the intel. After surviving, she contacts her estranged father for help, Severum Rivenshear. Having no idea he had a daughter, Severum agrees to help, but the tension of his absence throughout her life builds as he works to build a relationship with her.

Ash and her father discover a research lab where Severum uncovers a connection between Geosturm and the Old Guard, a scion of the now defunct Government of Evig Natt led by Eduardo Culptos. The Old Guard seek to restore their power over the hemisphere by accelerating the planet’s rotation at breakneck speed, exacerbating the negative ecological effects, as they convince the public that the planet was better off in darkness. They’re motivated by the wealth they obtained back when light was scarce and commodified, and seek a restoration of their influence. Severum catches glimpse of a scientist being held captive at the lab during his reconnaissance, but he’s forced to back down due to being outnumbered, and unable at the age of sixty-nine to fight efficiently due to his war injuries.

Severum approaches K.O.A., an offshoot of O.A.K., for help at their commune where he obtains equipment, and cybernetic upgrades to offset the effects of aging. Eventually, he learns that most of those effects were in his mind and not actual limitations.

What Readers are Saying:

“Severum is positioned as a critique of our vision of a neat split between nature and corporate existence. The tension of a world that is now connected but with cultural practices that reflect that old divide was fun to explore!”_  Dr. Joseph Hurtgen, Sci-Fi Scholar and Professor

Dominion by John L. Ford

An escape into the analogy of Artificial Intelligence by critically acclaimed science fiction author, John Ford!

Released and published by Rockhill Publishing / The book is available worldwide in paperback and e-format

Where the corrosive power of time failed, Dominion begins. Unable to wear down the chains of grief left in the wake of losing her and stuck in the quagmire of postmortem morosity, Colton is on the verge of hanging his legacy upon the gallery walls of dimmed mediocrity in the museum of unknown history. Then, it happens.

A flash of insight, as though spoken from the grave, it becomes the guiding light; one desperately needed to reinvent purpose and meaning. It is so much of what she meant to him shining through, that internal voice from the past, that it strikes him with an idea so profound it could only result in the ensuing research. Is it fiction or reality?

Leonardo da Vinci visualized flying machines, and the essential aspects of that ‘fiction’ became fact. And just as the genetics of his ideas evolved into man-made dragonflies and humming birds, Colton Reinholt, a physicist, with a unique mind for synthesis, drafts an idea, too.

Borrowed by observation of actual physiological biology, he uses solid state physics to reconstruct a natural paradigm only ever achieved by evolution’s miracle, the human mind. Thus, what emerges in this physical and ethereal journey simply must carry more than mere soupcon of riveting plausibility.

So, through accelerating technological forces on the world often charging boldly before compunction, we are compelled by our own evolution to satisfy an unstoppable desire for discovery. What is really meant by the phrase, ‘Artificial Intelligence’? This is what we adventure through experimental exploration into the energy of the mind.

What begins as an innocent thought experiment, frolicsome dabbling fuses with technical know-how and its synthesis results in a fantastic gestalt. By bridging disparate scientific disciplines, it ultimately gives rise to a power that may either become benevolent or malevolent. For despite all human conceits, the answer to the question of good versus evil is not one we are capable to define.

What Readers are Saying:

“Dominion is different. It makes me feel smart for figuring it out; the author doesn’t talk down to you. He writes intelligently, and he writes intelligent characters. He keeps his plot complex, and the reader on his or her toes, and trusts you are capable of absorbing each word. The fact that what happens is theoretically feasible makes this hard sci-fi novel all the better, eventually blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. Dominion should be slipped slowly like a fine wine at first, because in the end it will totally intoxicate you”

“John Ford really knows how to tell a story. Like, wow!”

About John Ford:

John L Ford is a lifelong fan turned author of Science Fiction. He hails from a background in Natural Sciences having a degree in Meteorology. Owing to the fact that both his chosen literary genre, and his acumen in weather forecasting both offer plethoras of opportunity for fiction … it is quite fitting that any Meteorologist’s creativity would be in the art of the ‘what if.’

His attempt does just that … extrapolate a vision of a world from a foundation of real sciences, pushing plausibility as suspense. This, his first novel, Dominion takes an esoteric aspect of real human biology, mixes it with solid-state physics, and produces an AI that should really force the reader to question its feasibility. Writing this sort of fiction with enhanced feel for explanation perhaps got more than planned for, ..as it was later shown by Sir Roger Penrose, famed Physicist and Mathematician, et al, that the very ‘fiction’ that propels the story, may in fact be real in nature and not so much fictional at all. This novel was written with no formal affiliation or awareness of those real worlds sciences as they were unfolding. Thus, Dominion tells the story of human ingenuity meddling with real Nature in a uniquely suggestive way.

He otherwise keeps his intellect sharp through is professional day job in software technology, as well as occasionally blogging in social media platforms relevant to the above. In between hours given to these, and tears given to heartaches elsewhere, or gazing at clouds he dreams up his next novel.

My Review of The Enigma Gamers (The Enigma Series Book 7) by Breakfield and Burkey

Description:

A new team of cyber hunters has emerged.
Julie and Juan created the cyber assassin technology services (CATS) team to provide hands on support for clients all over the world. The CATS team mantra is to find and stop outrageous cyber-crimes. These specialists are grittier than regular keyboard jockeys with their ex-military, ex-CIA backgrounds, and ex- covert to hit the cyber thugs hard.

These elite experts work at ground zero to locate and terminate cyber warfare aimed at businesses and governments around the world. Their expertise is all about finding and stopping digital extortion by cyber thugs who think they are anonymous and untraceable.

Digital ransom demands by these cyber criminals prove these gamers are after about far more than points and wins for their Avatars.

George, Ty, Ernesto, Mercedes, Summit, and Brayson—travel to investigate their remote but similar assignments. Tragically, the organizations they support are unwilling to listen to the long-term risks—preferring to be victims and hostages of the escalating digital ransom demands. Is it cheaper to pay the ransom or more convenient?

The gaming monsters believe they can’t be caught or stopped. Julie and Juan’s talented, tenacious team of professionals are committed to finding and punishing evil achievers in every corner of the real and virtual worlds. The bad actors can attack from the Darknet but these criminals can NOT hide from the CATS team.

My Review:

This is the third book from this duo that I’ve read.  Since I’m a gamer at heart, I thought I’d give this story a spin.  I did not read it in order, however, it does work as a standalone.  Though, at the end, there was a reference to a prior incident that made me go, Hmmm?

What I liked: Every time I read one of their books, I come away knowing how vulnerable we are with all our technical advancements.  There will ALWAYS be a bad actor just one step ahead to cause terror and panic.  I’m not sure if we currently have any cities, warehouses, or mining operations that are totally automated, but this story shows that total automation, though cost effective for the bottom line of a corporation, still needs some human involvement to keep things in check.  I felt this story bordered on sci-fi as well, as we don’t have AI supercomputers that can flirt, hold a normal conversation, or have supercomputer buddies.

I also enjoyed the camaraderie of the R-Group.  Though the characters are still one-dimensional, I liked when they got together to brainstorm and became more like a family than a work force.

What I didn’t like: For all the books they’ve published so far, their writing hasn’t improved.  No character development, stilted dialogue and, in this book, so many proofreading errors.  There were times when I found two to three errors on one page.  I felt like they rushed the book to publication without a final edit.

Like the other books in this series, it will not be for the average reader as it’s crammed full of techno jargon.  But, if you love the ones & zeros and like international thrillers, you might enjoy this series.
