MY REVIEW:
I picked up this book thinking it was part of the The Enigma Series, but it’s not. It’s a whole different series but the titles confused me. This is book 5 of the series but it can be read as a stand-alone story.
What I liked about the story. Though this is considered a cozy mystery, the authors touched upon the horrors of human trafficking and the impact it causes to the small towns and surrounding farms along the Texas and Mexican borders. Mary Lou and her podcasters could be considered busy-bodies, but they saw a threat to their community and decided to be pro-active instead of waiting for the authorities to take care of the problem. In steps JJ and Jo, and with their help, they’re able to get the sheriff and Feds to take action. Still, I thought it a bit too pat that JJ happened to be there just when the hacking of the podcasts started.
What I didn’t like. I am not a fan of using dialogue to describe the scene and what people are wearing. It makes the conversation stilted and unrelatable as people don’t talk that way. It’s something novice writers do. The characters were also too one dimensional. The only way to tell who was talking was by the dialogue tags. No individuality at all, and therefore, they were also unforgettable.
If you like cozy mysteries you might enjoy the story. For me, I give it 3 stars.
Since last weekend, my brother lost a daughter and step-son. I suppose that’s why my mind has been on a darker slant. Hence, the books I’ve added below are in the dystopian genre. What’s bleaker than life after some sort of disaster? Of course, the way our world is shaping up right now, we’re heading for that outcome sooner rather than later. Are you prepared?
Joey Moss first became known to many Canadians because of his work with the NHL Edmonton Oilers hockey team. Joey loved connecting with people. Whether he was singing “Oh Canada” on a jumbotron screen at a hockey game, welcoming a new friend with a playful wrestling match, or dancing on a runway for a charity fashion show, Joey loved making people feel good. But his impact and influence started long before he joined the Oilers. Joey was born with Down syndrome at a time when many children like him were institutionalized. Instead, Joey lived at home, surrounded by his supportive family who was determined that he should receive the same opportunities as others. From this loving environment grew a caring, energetic man who went on to show the world that people like him could do many things and contribute greatly to society. The inspiring true story of Joey Moss, a champion for all to have an opportunity to live a full, purposeful life, comes alive in this heartwarming picture book for young readers.
Born in Anihim Lake, British Columbia, and a member of the Ulkatch First Nation, Carey Price grew up spending much of his time outdoors ― hunting, fishing and riding horses. Playing many spectacular seasons for the Montreal Canadiens, Carey has won everything from the Calder Cup to the Venzina Trophy, and from the Indspire Award to Olympic Gold!
Packed with photos and including 16 pages of hockey action comic sequences, this full-colour, easy-to-read biography will teach fans how Carey Price became a player known for taking care of the net, his team, and himself in a way that is uniquely his own.

Several months ago, a storm rolled through Omaha and woke me up. As I watched the lightening flicker through my window, I decided to record it. It came out pretty cool and then inspiration struck and I wanted to transform the footage into a video with music and pictures/short vids. And me being me, it had to have a dark fantasy theme. LOL.
And then, on Labor Day, my brother’s daughter, Tamara Foley, passed away. Her health had been declining for a few years but the progression ramped up with other complications which resulted in her death. Tammi was born with a broken mind and body and she had many struggles through her life. But she always had a smile on her face and she loved to eat and never gained a pound. Used to make us Fat Foley Girls jealous.
Then, yesterday, my brother’s step-son, Jason, passed away unexpectedly which was another devastating blow to him and his wife. Jason’s life had been tragic in that he’d been in and out of trouble and was just getting his life straightened around when he had a horrific motorcycle accident and suffered massive brain damage. For the past several years he was in a nursing home on life support. Again, a broken body but unfortunately for him, he was aware of his circumstances.
Their sister Katie said this about what she hopes happened: She (Tammi) probably told him it was cooler on that side and he decided to ditch this place.
I hope Katie’s right and both of them will find the love and happiness they deserve once they awaken from their journey to the other side.
