New Release: The Best of Edward M. Lerner by Edward M. Lerner

A TESTAMENT TO ONE OF THE INNOVATORS AND LEADERS IN THE SCIENCE FICTION GENRE

Released by ReAnimus Press!  /  Available in e-book and print form across all platforms!

Here are the gems! The gateway to the many worlds of Edward M. Lerner!

While you probably know Ed from his SF novels, including the InterstellarNet series and the epic Fleet of Worlds series with Larry Niven—Ed is also a prolific author of acclaimed short fiction. This collection showcases his finest and favorite shorter works.

Faced with the common question of which of his books should someone read first, he has carefully selected these stories to cover his wide range. Now he can answer, “This one!”

Alternate history. Parallel worlds. Future crime. Alien invasion. Alien castaways. Time travel. Quantum intelligence (just don’t call him artificial). A (sort of) haunted robot. Deco punk. In this book, you’ll find these—and more—together with Ed’s reminiscences about each selection and its relationship to other stories, novels, and even series that span his writing career.

These are the best, as determined by awards, award nominations, and the selective tastes of eight top editors and choosy Analog readers.

Each excellent story stands alone—you won’t need to have read anything prior—but you’ll surely want to read more of Ed’s books afterwards.

“Lerner’s world-building and extrapolating are top notch.”  —SFScope

“This collection demonstrates the author’s wide range within the field of science fiction. Fans of the genre are sure to find something to fit their tastes.”  — Tangent Online

Other Works By Edward Lerner:

Déjà Doomed by [Edward M. Lerner]

On the Moon’s far side, shielded from Earth’s radio cacophony, Americans are building a radio-astronomy observatory. Russians sift the dust of a lunar “sea” for helium-3 to run future fusion reactors. Commercial robots, remotely operated from Earth, roam the Moon’s near side in a hunt for mineral wealth. Why chase distant asteroids for precious metals? Onetime asteroids must lie close beneath the much-bombarded lunar surface.

Then a prospecting robot encounters a desiccated, spacesuited figure. An alien figure ….

Americans from the lunar observatory investigate. Near the original find, underground, they discover an alien installation. Lunar Russians, realizing that the Americans are up to something clandestine, send their own small team. Each group distrusts the other … even before the fatal “accidents” begin. By the time anyone suspects what ancient evil they have awakened, it may be too late—

For everyone on Earth, too.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2022 HAWTHORNE PRIZE – Daughter Of Hades!!

Daughter Of Hades

Telling the Complicated History of the Caribbean Through the Eyes Of Two Sets of Siblings

Released and published by Inklings Publishing / The book is available worldwide in e-format

Mack Little’s sophomore novel traces the fascinating and often painful Caribbean history through the life experience of siblings as they try to escape their homes and strive for a better life.

Daughter of Hades first depicts the story of Dinny and Jimmie, twin brother and sister who have grown up as enslaved people on a plantation in Barbados. When Dinny’s life faces more threats as the master’s infatuation with her grows, the siblings make their way onto a pirate ship. Though safety will not come yet for the two siblings, it seems that love is in the cards for at least one of them, as Dinny falls in love with a Chinese sailor named Lei.

The storyline alternates with another set of siblings: two brothers named Ivan and Pax as they desperately try to make their way to Jamaica. The two storylines eventually clash and the two sets of siblings are faced with a Rolodex of suspenseful events that bring to light pain, romance, and survival, in any condition.

The book gets its inspiration from the long and harrowing history of slavery in the Caribbean. It is one of the most exciting historical fiction novels with a story that is still relevant today.

But Daughters of Hades is much more than a lesson of Caribbean history and the effects slavery has on these siblings. At its core, it is a fight for survival and revenge captured in its more pure state, and a historical romance that shows people can find love even in the strangest of places, or the strangest of situations.

“An engaging, swashbuckling tale of love and revenge during the age of piracy.” – Kirkus Reviews

“Little fills us in on the important Caribbean history and how the rules of a terrible trade system changed from one island to another. Envisioning the beautiful settings of Jamaica and Barbados and recognizing their histories illuminates a truth that readers will really benefit from knowing.” – Jaylynn Korrell (Independent Book Review)

About Mack:

Mack Little grew up in the Deep South and has accumulated a vibrant experience which she often emulates in her storytelling. Her studies in International Politics and service in the Army have given her impressive perspectives to bring to her novels new layers of intrigues and twists, which are all quite prevalent in her latest novel, Daughter of Hades.

New Release: The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad by Natasha Deen

The Newest YA Novel from Award-Winning #OwnVoices Author Natasha Deen

The book is available by Hachette Books across all platforms!

From award-winning, #OwnVoices author Natasha Deen comes a new funny, honest, YA novel following one girl as she tries to win over her crush before she leaves for college.

Let’s be clear. No matter what her older brother, Robby, says, aspiring screenwriter Tuna Rashad is not “stupidstitious.” She is, however, cool with her Caribbean heritage, which means she is always on the lookout for messages from loved ones who have passed on. But ever since Robby became a widower, all he does is hang out at the house, mock Tuna for following in their ancestors’ traditions, and meddle in her life.

Tuna needs to break free from her brother’s loving but over-bearing ways and get him a life (or at least, get him out of hers!). Based on the signs, her ancestors are on board. They also seem to be on board with helping Tuna win over her crush, Tristan Dangerfield. The only hiccup? She has to do it before leaving for college in the fall. A ticking clock, a grief-stricken brother, and a crush who doesn’t believe in signs. What could possibly go wrong?

“Effervescent and irrepressible, Tuna Rashad will leap off the page and straight into your hearts.”―Nafiza Azad, author of The Candle and the Flame, The Wild Ones

“Genuine growth is hard to script but easy to find here.”―Kirkus Reviews

OTHER WORKS BY NATASHA DEEN:

In the Key of Nira Ghani by [Natasha Deen]

A Guyanese girl must find the balance between her parents’ “old world” expectations and traditions while pursuing her dream of being a great trumpeter in this contemporary, coming-of-age story.

Nira Ghani has always dreamed of becoming a musician. Her Guyanese parents, however, have big plans for her to become a scientist or doctor. Nira’s grandmother and her best friend, Emily, are the only people who seem to truly understand her desire to establish an identity outside of the one imposed on Nira by her parents. When auditions for jazz band are announced, Nira realizes it’s now or never to convince her parents that she deserves a chance to pursue her passion.

As if fighting with her parents weren’t bad enough, Nira finds herself navigating a new friendship dynamic when her crush, Noah, and notorious mean-girl, McKenzie “Mac,” take a sudden interest in her and Emily, inserting themselves into the fold. So, too, does Nira’s much cooler (and very competitive) cousin Farah. Is she trying to wiggle her way into the new group to get closer to Noah? Is McKenzie trying to steal Emily’s attention away from her? As Farah and Noah grow closer and Emily begins to pull away, Nira’s trusted trumpet “George” remains her constant, offering her an escape from family and school drama.

But it isn’t until Nira takes a step back that she realizes she’s not the only one struggling to find her place in the world. As painful truths about her family are revealed, Nira learns to accept people for who they are and to open herself in ways she never thought possible.

A relatable and timely contemporary, coming-of age story, In the Key of Nira Ghani explores the social and cultural struggles of a teen in an immigrant household.

Stay by Katherine Lawrence

Award-winning middle-grade novel-in-verse by acclaimed Saskatoon poet Katherine Lawrence now available in new edition from Shadowpaw Press

Stay, an award-winning middle-grade novel-in-verse by acclaimed Saskatoon poet Katherine Lawrence, orphaned by the demise of Coteau Books in 2020, is now back in print in a new edition from Regina’s Shadowpaw Press.

Stay is being released under the company’s Reprise imprint, which focuses on producing new editions of notable, previously published work, won the 2017 Moonbeam Award for Children’s Poetry (Gold) and was a finalist for both the Poetry Award and the Children’s Literature Award in the 2018 Saskatchewan Book Awards.

“I’m thrilled to know that Stay has been given a second life,” Lawrence said. “This story of a twelve-year-old girl who navigates a world made complex by family breakdown is one that kids everywhere can relate to.”

“I was captivated by Stay the moment I read it,” said Edward Willett, editor and publisher of Shadowpaw Press. “I’m excited to be able to give it new life for new readers.”

Stay can be bought directly from the publisher or from most online bookstores in both ebook and print and can also be ordered through any brick-and-mortar bookstore. This handy URL provides links to multiple online sources:  https://books2read.com/KatherineLawrenceStay.

More about the book

Millie is eleven going on twelve when her life is upended by her parents’ decision to separate. Her mother gets a new boyfriend, and her father moves into a new place: an apartment with a big sign on the door that says NO DOGS ALLOWED. Since there’s nothing Millie wants more than a dog of her own, that seems like the biggest blow of all.

Hoping to get her parents back together—not just for her sake, but for the sake of her future dog—Millie is elated when her father moves back in after a short while. She can’t understand why her parents aren’t happy at the reconciliation until she learns the truth: her father is back because he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Told in verse by acclaimed Canadian poet Katherine Lawrence, Stay is a moving, touching, and yet often humorous portrait of a family in a time of crisis, whose pain is filtered through the thoughts and actions of an eleven-year-old girl. Stay captures the essence of what it means to grow up, confront your fears, support your family, and share in the wild optimism that only youth can harbour.

Praise for Stay

“At first glance, Stay appears to be modest in length, form, and story. But within the spare pages of this middle-grade novel-in-verse is a powerful narrative about a family in transition and the young girl at its centre who needs to form something new and whole from what remains. . . Stay might be a quick read, but it’s a book that should be savoured.” –  Quill & Quire (starred review)

“While a child can teach a dog to ‘Stay,’ a child cannot cause parents to stay together. This free-verse novel is a powerful portrayal of a nuclear family that is coming apart . . . Highly Recommended.” – Canadian Review of Materials

Stay is brilliantly written; each word serves its purpose and powerfully paints the characters. The format is wonderfully unique. It manages to be both accessible to children and lyrically sophisticated at the same time. Heavy subject matter is treated with a deft hand.” – Judges, Children’s Literature Award, 2018 Saskatchewan Book Awards

“Katherine Lawrence’s middle-grade novel-in-verse, Stay, evokes the changeable emotions of eleven-year-olds and the enduring truths of community. Here is a world of families in transition, poor puppy training, and the possibility of discovering something new within the tatters of the old. Filled with charm and world play, Stay is a hopeful response to our modern struggles . . . It’s everyday magic—stirred up, made bright.” – Judges, Saskatchewan Arts Board Poetry Award, 2018 Saskatchewan Book Awards

Sahara’s Review of The Burning Tree: Book 1: Salvation by Christopher Artinian

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

The bunkers were built for the apocalypse. Just not the one they expected.

Life was bad and getting worse in the depths of Salvation. It did not take the people of Level Three long to realise that the only reason they had been spared from the cataclysm was to become a slave class.

Now, a single accident has changed everything. Fear is spreading like a virus. Rumours become facts the moment they’re spoken. Neighbour is turning against neighbour. And time is running out fast.

For most, this signals the end. For Callie and her friends, there is just one hope, but to find it, they’re going to have to fight through the most terror-filled night of their lives.

Can they escape the horror that awaits them? Or will these next few hours be their last?

MY REVIEW:

This is the first book by this author I’ve read and it was recommended to me by a friend.

The story doesn’t take place on some far-off -planet but it might as well have with all the world building needed.  Artinan’s description of the bunker with the different levels and living conditions makes the reader feel like they’re right there.  He also has a grasp of human nature and the human condition.  How most people are so willing to follow anyone that makes choices for them so they’re not responsible for their own actions. Sounds like our society today.

I felt the first part of the book was slow as there was excessive repeating of the same events as new characters got involved.  And too much describing of ordinary routines, like making tea or getting ready in the morning.  Not necessary and just makes the reader want to skip over those parts.  The author also had a tendency to get on a Liberal/socialist soap box and those parts did get flipped over.

Then everything went to hell in a handbag.  From that point on pages were turned faster and the tension built.  I found myself holding my breath, waiting to see what happened.  Please don’t let them die.

There were a few characters I related to more than others.  One is Michelle ad the other Susan.  I can’t wait to see what happens to them in book two.  Which I will be reading.  As for Greenslade, not sure how I feel about him.  Is he good or bad?  Did he get his just desserts?  We shall see.

If you’re a fan of dystopian YA novels like Hunger Games, action and adventure, and family drama, you’ll enjoy this story.  I give it 4 stars.

My Review of I am You am I by Thorsten Nesch

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

She comes from a rich family in Vancouver and enjoys horse back riding, he lives on the wrong side of town and calls boxing his hobby. Two very different teenagers changing their bodies accidentally and have to live the life of the other. The funniest body switch comedy you will read.

MY REVIEW:

This is one of those love-it/hate-it books.  It’s a spin-off of Trading Places meets Freaky Friday.

Nicole and Frank are the stereotypical troupe of rich girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks.  However, this isn’t a romance.  Instead it’s two teenagers who end up swapping bodies through a freaky science experiment.  Due to the writing / formatting style of the editor / author, it was hard to know who was talking and the story became confusing at times.

Even though the characters were very one dimensional, over half way through the book I began to feel for them.  Nicole’s plight being stuck in Frank’s life while Frank got to experience a world only seen from afar.  Why would Frank want to go back?  It wasn’t hard to figure out the twist.

There were several times I wanted to DNF it, but like a bad train wreck, I had to see what happened.  And I’m glad I stuck it out as I liked the ending.  It fit perfectly and was well done.

And this is why I hated the book and almost DNF’d it:

Yeah. – You’re so pretty Nicole.

– I know.

– I’m proud of you. I smile at her.

– I love you.

– Love you too.

Would I recommend the story?  If you can handle all the wrong punctuation for dialogue, which is what really killed the story for me, then yeah, try it.  You’ll probably like it.  I give it 3 stars.

My Review of Running with Roselle by Michael Hingson

Description:

A puppy who became a true American hero. The blind boy who let nothing stop him. When they finally grew up and met, it was magic. On September 11, 2001, a blind man escaped the World Trade Center by walking down 78 flights of stairs with his guide dog. Days later, America fell in love with Mike and Roselle, and the special bond that helped them survive. Mike shared his story in the New York Times bestselling book, Thunder Dog.

Now, in Running With Roselle, kids can follow Roselle as she grows from an energetic yellow Lab prone to stealing her puppy raiser’s slippers to a confident guide dog who passes the ultimate test when her partner needs her most. Meet Mike, a boy blind from birth who excels in public school, shocks the neighbors by riding his bicycle through the streets of Palmdale, CA, drives a car around his college campus, and uses his relationship of trust and teamwork with Roselle to help others on a day that changed America forever.

My Review:

Being born visually impaired, and then legally blind by 14, I can so relate to Mike.  I went to school about the same time frame and I can attest to the struggles students with disabilities faced.  Classes were based on the chalkboard or overhead projectors.  To me it was all a blur, even sitting right next to the teacher’s desk. And only a few teachers took the effort to help someone that needed the extra assistance.

Kudos to Mike, and his parents, for helping him be ordinary.  We learn to live and work with our limitations and strive to be like everyone else.  I totally get his thrill with driving.

As for Roselle, how could you not love her?  She was so brave and sounded like an amazing dog.  I just knew I would cry, and I did.

This was also an educational story as it explained how guide dogs are trained and the process they have to go through.  To me, it almost borders on animal cruelty, but I understand the need for the strict discipline for them to help their partners.

What I didn’t like was making a 4 year-old and dog sound like an adult with complex thoughts and ideas.  That didn’t set well with my logical brain. But that was probably just me.

Other than that, I enjoyed the story and sad that 9-11 has become a footnote in our history and almost forgotten.  Readers who are dog lovers, enjoy true life stories, and like learning new stuff will love this book.  I give it 4 stars.

Duatero by Brad C. Anderson

Brad C. Anderson’s searing far-future science fiction novel Duatero now available again in new edition from Shadowpaw Press

“I am thrilled that Shadowpaw Press has given my book a new life and audience,” Anderson said. “It has been great working with someone passionate about books and who wants to put them in readers’ hands.”

Duatero is a powerful work of science fiction that confronts issues of morality and survival head-on in a carefully thought-out and terrifying alien world,” said Edward Willett, editor and publisher of Shadowpaw Press. “It deserves to find many new readers, and I’m thrilled to be able to give it that opportunity.”

Duatero can be bought directly from the publisher or from most online bookstores in both ebook and print and can also be ordered through any brick-and-mortar bookstore. This handy URL provides links to multiple online sources:  https://books2read.com/duatero/

More about the book

Majstro Falchilo Kredo has devoted his life to protecting the abandoned Earth colony of Duatero from Malamiko, the indigenous ecosystem that makes their crops fail and whose contamination turns humans into mindless monsters.

But Malimiko is changing, becoming more dangerous, more aware, even as the ancient technology the humans use to combat it fails piece by precious piece. Kredo and his fellow soldiers must risk everything or see all they hold precious wiped away and forgotten.

Kredo is prepared to sacrifice himself—and anyone around him—to do his duty. But what if the price demanded is even higher?

Praise for Duatero

“Combines power armoured soldiers from the pages of sci-fi pulps, a world as intriguing yet bleak as Mid-World from Stephen King’s Dark Tower, and an evil as terrifying and paranoia-inducing as John Carpenter’s The Thing. A descent into the darkness of a failing world and the brutal zealotry of its defenders.” – Matt Moore, Aurora Award-winning author of It’s Not the End and Other Lies
