THE BALANCE IS IN CHAOS

Little caterpillar, it is time to stop hiding in the cocoon and become the powerful butterfly I always knew you would be.

Mara’s father had predicted that the little caterpillar would one day become the powerful butterfly, and his prophecy has rung true. With the enslaved Miezitari liberated, the dark goddess, Snowystra, can never hurt anyone again.

Free of the darkness of Winter, Cole and Mara return home from Snowstrum. They are finally able to begin their new life together, but, as fate would have it, everything starts to crumble around them. The magic they promised to protect feels less like a blessing and more like a curse.

Once again, Mara is forced to seek out answers from the hidden world. In the realm of the gods, she struggles to learn how to defend the child inside her. Will Mara have to give up everything, and everyone, she loves to protect the magic?

REVIEWS

***** I was transported to the realms of different gods and goddesses, amazing!

*It should be noted that this book can be read as a stand alone!!!***In this story we find Cole trying to heal from what he had done and what was done to him Snowstrum, by Snowestra. Meanwhile, Mara is pregnant with their baby and not coping well with his absence. Cedric is still hanging around and causes trouble when he does something stupid! The gods really cause trouble when they threaten to take Mara and Cole’s baby to become the new Winter, since Snowestra was destroyed and it holds Winter’s magic. ( Don’t worry that you don’t know what I’m talking about. She goes over it in the book.) Meg is given the decision of her eternity. The family grows closer, not farther apart. The family continues to protect the magic that they were gifted with. There are so many questions in this book! The first, will Cole be healed? What will Mara have, boy or girl? What will Meg choose? What about Gram and Gramps, how are they doing in the Afterlife? This book is all about restoring the balance of the magic. I also think it’s a little about restoring the balance to family.

**** Nice third step in the story

For a third book, this one stands alone pretty well. I’d say it would *help* to read the other books first in order to fully understand the bad guys, the gods, the elementals, etc. However, the author does a good job of peppering in the pertinent information when there’s something more you need to know.

As with the other books, this story is all about family. I love the relationships between these characters. The themes of love, trust, loyalty, sacrifice – everything that makes us as readers care about characters is there.

The plot certainly thickens in this part of the story, and the author was clever about twisting around some things I thought I knew (avoiding spoilers). While this book picks up after the last one, there’s still quite a time gap where stuff happened that affects what happens now. I liked that this allowed the characters to now be older and more adult, and Mara’s struggles with Cole and her pregnancy definitely amp up the drama. Early on, I got kind of sick of all the angst revolving around Cole, and then how it got fixed kind of made me wonder why they didn’t just do that in the first place, but the story moves on pretty well.

The plot kept me reading, eager to find out what happened next. The dialogue is believable and often touching. The descriptions – from the food to some really creepy scenes with otherworldly characters – left a perfect picture in my head. The end certainly moves in a whole new direction for one character in particular, and I look forward to seeing what happens next. (Winter is coming. Wink, wink.)
