Author Interview With Melinda Kucsera

Melinda Kucsera

Today, I’d like to introduce Melinda Kucsera to my blog.  Let’s sit and have a chat.

Hi Readers! We’re here today to talk about our scribe and us too. So sit back and relax as we take you on a whirlwind tour of our madness. We’ll kick things off with our scribe, Melinda.

Melinda Kucsera writes fantastic short stories, novels, and books when not being kidnapped by dragons or chased by armies of fictional creatures. (We [her characters] do, on occasion, rescue her.)

So that’s what inspired her to write. We didn’t exactly give her a choice in the matter.

What’s your favorite book you’ve written and why?

Melinda loves all the books she’s written, but we [her lovable cast of characters] have our favorites. Since I’m writing this for the lot of them, I’ll go with mine.

My favorite is Curse Breaker: Sundered because I, the son and sidekick of Sarn, the book’s main character, get special powers in that one. I even save Papa a time or two from some seriously evil people. And I think it’s Papa’s favorite too because he turned a mental corner in that one and started accepting his magic. Since I like playing with said magic, that makes me very happy.

What are the best and worst aspects of writing?

There aren’t any from my point of view, but I’m a fictional character. I only exist when people read about me. The more page time I get, the better. But if I had to pick something, I’ll have to go with the length of time it takes to go from idea (ahem, us kidnapping our scribe) to the final, editing book.

Since our wonderful scribe has a day job, our books do not come out as fast as we would like. But we’re always looking for ways to fix that.

How do you balance marketing one book and writing the next?

Melinda leaves the running of her newsletter and all such marketing tasks to a cast of lovable characters who hog her inbox. Enough about her, it’s us you’re really interested in, her cast of characters. Join us every week for a new story.

Are you an Indie Author or are you part of a publishing house?

Melinda is an indie author. We, her fictional characters, are her publishers. We also might have a dragon, and she might have incinerated any query letters our scribe sent out.

I, of course, know nothing about that. I’m just a fictional child trying to rack up as many adventures with Sarn, my father, as I can before his masters find out how he’s spending his off hours.

What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Our scribe likes chronicling our adventures. We like hitting the all-important publish button because we only exist when you read us. We all have our priorities.

Do you read books in the genre you write?

Melinda listens to whatever is on sale on Audible. No, really. She has listened to 1800+ audio books over the years. She prefers action and adventure be it fictional, futuristic, fantastic or true-to-life.

Lately, she’s been listening to a lot of spy thrillers. Should we be worried about that? o_O

When you’re not writing, what do you do to recharge?

When Melinda’s not writing or working at her day job, she takes monstrously long walks, creates 3D artwork featuring our digital doubles and dodges our attempts to kidnap her.

What? We must get that all-important page time. Her words are our life.

Besides being an author, do you have a second job?

Yes, Melinda works as a project manager for IT at a scholarly publishing house. That job takes her away from us from 7 am-7 pm Monday-Friday. And that makes us sad.

Sometimes, we accompany her to work. You can read about our attempts to blur the line between reality and fiction on our blog or in our newsletter.

Our scribe faithfully chronicled every out-of-book adventure. To date, we’ve snuck around her office, engaged in a magical duel at a supermarket, rescued our stranded scribe and tried to outrun a bad storm. Aren’t we the best characters ever?

What makes you laugh?

We make Melinda laugh. Or rather, I, Ran, the son of Sarn, do. I am a fictional child after all, and I may have said the darndest things inside and outside of the books I co-star in. I’ve been known to ham it up in the newsletters too.

And there was that cake scene in Curse Breaker: Faceted. Papa certainly had a laugh over that one.

(I have a funny scene involving food in every book. What? I gotta eat sometime. Adventuring is hungry work.)

What (not who) would you take to a lonely island?

Our scribe would take something to write on since we only exist when she writes about us. So…I guess it’s not a lonely island after all if we’re all there?

Who would you like to invite for dinner?

Umm, we have dinner with our scribe every night. We use that time to regale her with new ideas for adventures. Gotta get that page time. Know what I’m saying?

It’s time to meet one of your characters. Which book is your character from?

Hi, I’m Ran. I’m the son of this really nice guy named Sarn. He has more magic than he knows what to with it. Together, we star in the Curse Breaker series.

There are some other people in there too like my angelic aunt and some enchanted trees, but we’re the main attraction. Well, Papa is. I’m his helper and his promoter. He’s the quite, shy type. I’m not.

What should we know about you?

I like to play with magic. Don’t worry. It’s less dangerous than it sounds.

Tell us about your story. When and where is your tale set?

Our story is set in an enchanted forest most of the time, but we live inside a mountain. Yes, we live inside it because a magical race of stone-mages decided to carve out a city in there. I have no idea why they did that. Maybe they thought it looked cool.

What is your personal goal? What do you ultimately want?

I want to have adventures with Papa. Papa just wants to raise me in peace, but no one will let him. Magic is illegal, and Papa has a lot of it. So he risks his life every time he goes out of our door.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do your face?

At the moment, there is a tentacular monster tearing apart our home. Papa and I are trying to stop it, but the nullifier took his magic, and the devil is trying to take his soul. He probably wants mine too, but I’m trying not to think about that. Papa has enough on his plate right now.
