Undisciplined Catalyst

Coletti Warlord Series Book 19

by Gail Koger

Genre: SciFi Paranormal Romance

I was sixteen when I found out not only am I an alien hybrid, but monsters called the Tai-Kok were getting ready to invade our world. Guess who gets to stop them? Me. How?

My uncle, the mad scientist, created a machine called the portal that instantaneously sends a test subject from one location to another by converting them into energy. His idea is to port me onto a Tai-Kok ship. All I have to do is leave a bomb, hit the retrieval button on my spiffy traveler’s belt and poof! I’m back on Earth before the Tai-Kok ship goes kaboom. Sounds simple, right?

Wrong. Uncle Ben doesn’t have a clue where I’ll actually appear on the ship. It could be the engine room, the crew quarters, or even the bridge. It’s like playing Russian roulette. The Tai-Kok don’t like surprises or uninvited guests.

To make things even more fun, I have an alien battle commander stuck in my head and I’m related to a powerful Coletti warlord. Yippee. The chances of me living to see eighteen aren’t good.

“Give ‘em hell.” A wild look in his eyes, Uncle Ben tapped on the portal’s control console.

The circles of light surrounded me, but this time it felt like a zillion fire ants were crawling over my body. Holy hell! Something had gone wrong! I appeared in midair and dropped like a rock. Smack! I slammed into someone, and my Glock went flying.

My eyes bugged. I was on the bridge of a futuristic warship, and the viewscreen showed one hell of a space battle that was going on. To make things even more fun, I was lying across the lap of a huge, muscle-bound male wearing black battle armor. Since he was sitting in the captain’s chair, I was assuming he was the boss.

A very angry-looking boss. I blinked. Holy cow was he good looking, if you were into the whole merciless predator thing. Huh? The red chains woven into his black warrior’s braids matched the communication device on his left wrist. Who knew aliens accessorized and why did I care? I took a deep breath trying to control the panic streaking through me.

A low growl rumbled in his chest

One look into his disturbingly hostile amber eyes and I knew I was in big trouble. I reached for my retrieval button.

His arms clamped around me painfully and he spat a bunch of gobbledygook.

“Sorry, I don’t speak that language,” I replied mentally. Somehow, I knew he was psychic.

A harsh voice sounded in my head, “How did you get through our shields.”

“Dunno. My uncle is the scientific genius, not me. I’m just the delivery girl.”

“What do you deliver?”

Did I look stupid? The minute I told him bombs; he’d kill me. I pasted a friendly smile on my face. “Stuff. I’m Lexi and you are?”

“Battle Commander Kaelen. I serve Zarek the Coletti Overlord.”

I had no clue who Zarek was, nor did I want to meet him. “You must be so proud.”

“Do you have a death wish, female?”

I grimaced. “Some people would think so.”

Howdy. My name is Gail Koger and once upon a time I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher. Too many years of wild requests, screwy questions, bizarre behavior and outrageous demands have left me with a permanent twitch and an uncontrollable craving for chocolate. I took up writing science fiction romance to keep from killing people. So far, it has worked.

She went back in time to rescue him.  She never counted on falling in love…

Alma Whitecrow prefers hunting and fishing with men, not romancing them. But hearing about the roguishly handsome coureur de bois, who saved her sister from the Dakota, haunts her thoughts and dreams. Well-versed in surviving the wilds, Alma resolves to travel to the mid-eighteenth century, as her sister once did, to save the man from impending death.

Charlot Baudelaire thumbs his nose at society’s expectations, content living as a loner, trading with people he calls the Saulters. If he needs a woman for the night, there is always a willing maiden. What he doesn’t expect is a spunky and stubborn female warrior to challenge him.

Charlot is not the man Alma dreamed about, and Alma is not the kind of woman Charlot pursues. But the longer they are together, the more drawn to each other they become, until Alma faces the biggest decision of her life. Stay with a man who may never reciprocate her love, or return to her Ojibway home and bland existence.

Maizemerized Book 1

She’s always been obsessed with her ancestors, and now he’s offering her a chance to live with them… forever.

Second-year university student Edie Whitecrow gobbles up each course on Indigenous studies. If only she could experience the lives of her Anishinaabe ancestors instead of reading about them. On her way to a Halloween party decked out as a historical Ojibway maiden, she spies a corn maze in a spot known to be barren.

A scarecrow figure beckons Edie to enter with the enticing offer of making her biggest wish come true. She jumps at the chance and finds herself in the past, face to face with the man who haunts her dreams—the handsome brave Thunder Bear. He claims he’s spent twelve years waiting for Gitche Manidoo to send her to him.

Life in the eighteenth century isn’t what Edie romanticized about, though. When her conscience is tested, she must choose between the modern day or the world of her descendants—where the man she was born for resides.

Goddess Fish Promotions: TRUE TARGET Virtual Book Tour & Giveaway – 11/24 to 12/19

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Austin S. Camacho will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Skye Maddox is a contract assassin driven by both personal demons and professional discipline. Hired by grieving father Milo Williams to hunt down the chain of men responsible for his son’s death, Skye takes on a mission that escalates into a war with Washington, D.C.’s most dangerous underworld figures led by a man known only as Hetman. As she climbs Milo’s ladder of revenge, Skye uncovers a web of corruption that links drug dealers, judges, mobsters, and even international crime syndicates.

The story escalates through brutal shootouts, betrayals, and psychological games, as Skye pushes deeper into Hetman’s empire. Each success makes her a bigger target. In the end, she must weigh the cost of finishing Milo’s revenge against the danger of becoming just another expendable weapon in someone else’s war.

Read an Excerpt

When Jayla stood, Skye raised a palm to stop her. “Yes. Yes, all right. I just finished an assignment, but it was part of a larger contract so I’m feeling like both the situations you mentioned. I’m on the job, and I just took a player off the board.”

Jayla jotted in her notebook. She always collected the euphemisms Skye used for her profession. “So, tell me about this latest assignment. How do you feel about this player you’ve taken off the board? Was it, in your mind, a just action?”

“You always want to go there,” Skye said, shaking her head. “What did I tell you? The first rule of the assassin’s doctrine. The target has got to deserve it.”

“Oh, yes,” Jayla said with a half-smile. “Your job, while criminal, does have rules

“I misspoke earlier,” Skye said, sliding a slim dagger out of her boot. “It’s not a job. It’s a profession. All professions have their rules. For doctors, rule number one is ‘do no harm’, right? For an assassin, it’s that the target has got to deserve it.” Skye began to absently flip the dagger in the air, catching it by its tip each time. “In this case, this bastard kidnapped my client’s son. I don’t know how they got him. My client kept his family totally under the radar. But once he got the ransom demand, the client agreed to pay, and the ransom money was in transit but not fast enough to suit the kidnappers. They killed the boy, I think just to make a point. Just to be snotty. The action took place overseas and no way the police would ever have gotten close to the killer.”

Jayla nodded. “I think I understand. So, you were hired to…”

“Correct the balance,” Skye said, standing.

Author Question:

What are the pros and cons of writing in your genre?

I love writing thrillers and have never before thought about any negatives. The pros are easy to list.

Writing a thriller allows me to create situations with high stakes. Not just physical stakes but also emotional stakes. I get to create not just excitement but lots of suspense. Intense emotion is what makes these stories so much fun. I also write stories with strong pacing. Things move faster in a good thriller than any other genre I think. I love writing what I love to read, stories that move quickly, with short sentences and cliffhangers at the end of every chapter.

At the same time, because of all that, thrillers allow me to create deep and complex characters. Putting people in stressful and dangerous situations allows me to reveal what makes those characters tick. Unlike my mysteries, I can use multiple points of view in my thrillers. Sometimes I can use this to make the reader unsure about who the hero is, or maybe make them think the people on both sides of the conflict are heroes.

The best thing about writing thrillers, I think, is that it gives me a chance to explore real-life social conflicts. Fiction is a good way to tell the truth, because fictional people can deal with the same social, political, racial, and economic issues we all face.

I guess the only negative I can think of to writing in my genre is that it’s hard. Plots have got to be complex and it’s hard to maintain the pace that will please thriller fans. My fans, and everyone who loves to read thrillers, have high expectations. They demand that I keep every promise I make in terms of hero/villain conflicts. The stakes MUST be high and there needs to be a sustained sense of urgency.

If you write the kind of thrillers I do – crime or crime fighting stories, there’s a certain amount of research called for. My readers know enough about guns, martial arts, poisons and such that if I don’t get it right they won’t come back. I suppose that’s a con too, but I actually enjoy the research so it’s not a bad thing to me.

Goddess Fish Promotions: MITCHELL ROSE AND THE BOLOGNA MASSACRE Virtual Book Tour & Giveaway – 11/17 to 11/28

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Mark A. Hill will be awarding a $15 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Mitchell Rose and the Bologna Massacre is a crime story that explores the last fifty years of cross-fertilisation between the Italian criminal underworld, its secret services, politics and the judicial system.

When Mitchell Rose is called to Milan by Remo Rhimare, a local judge who wants him to investigate the Bologna bombing of 1980, he knows it would make more sense to turn the job down.

To make things even more complicated, Rhimare also wants Rose to rein in his errant daughter, who is becoming increasingly wayward.

As Rose begins to investigate, the two missions surprisingly become one, culminating in a dreadful dramatic climax.

Read an Excerpt

I twitched nervously. The will to move out of there and toward the action was strong. I wanted to be an integral part of the scene that I could see reflected there in the mobile phone. Alessandra raised a hand and made a gesture that encouraged me to stay put. In doing so, she touched me softly on the left shoulder with her long fingernails. Being discovered there would put me back to square one. Robuyuki was gonna get his from Cambio’s guards, but I had to stay still, I couldn’t move.

“It’s also my favourite drink.” The chef offered.

“But you don’t drink, Robuyuki.”

Robuyuki lifted the glass to his lips and forced the drink down his neck, licking his lips with satisfaction.

Cambio had been silenced and we heard the clumped, mechanical tramping of feet as they exited the restaurant. Alessandra heaved a sigh of relief and we slowly moved apart. I poured a glass of Grand Marnier into the glass that I had seized and we shared it there in the cellar. The sense of relief was overwhelming and we hugged each other, but without the intensity that there had been between us moments before. There was still a layer of fear that lay like a film across the room, and that fear had rendered us sexless siblings. Robuyuki knocked on the cellar door and we climbed back up and thanked him sincerely.

An Author’s interview question:

Who, out of your contemporaries, do you most admire and why?

I always regard that as a slightly odd question in that when I read 95% of published writers who are out there, I am always taken aback at the raw unadulterated novel writing talent that exists in the world. The same with poetry. If you take a copy of The Rialto or the Poetry Society’s publications and you start reading, the quantity of talented writers operating today is breath-taking. Then, someone asks you who your favourite writers are and you have to choose two or three, you can’t say I love everyone.

Contemporaries is a funny word because I would tend to say Martin Amis, John Niven, Will Self, Delillo, Stephen Markley, Eliza Clark writers who are working in genres that are worlds apart from mine and must be somewhat older than me (except Eliza). They are so experimental and creative continually pushing at the boundaries of what is allowed or not in the literary sphere, whereas what I have produced here is tight and controlled. I read a lot of Italian novels and I love Paolo Nori and Flavio Soriga.

I would like to think that in future I would be able to experiment as these writers do, be a little more creative. First, though, you need publications, recognition and a book deal. There’s a piece in The Information by Martin Amis where the unsuccessful writer and main character, Richard Tull, has written a scene in his -never to be seen- third novel that involves several of the characters moving through a revolving hotel door, while their mobile phones somehow cross lines and become interconnected. It’s written as an example of the type of narrative that no one would be interested in reading, a scene that would probably give a publisher a massive headache. Every time I look at it, I think well that sounds interesting. That’s the sort of thing I could have written that and had binned by multiple publishers. That’s me.

In fact, one time, I wrote a novel about three plumbers working in a bathroom and discussing the nature of language, grammar and phonetics, and whether language was learnt or taught. They end up on a mountain in north Sardinia toting pistols, eye gauging and re-enacting scenes from the third and fourth acts of King Lear. I thought it was a work of genius, but quite predictably a publisher was relatively hard to come by. My son pulled it out of the top drawer the other day and asked me what on earth I was going on about. He’s not a Shakespeare reader. If any publishers out there are interested…(lol)

I went back to Raymond Chandler recently as I was a little worried as to whether I had actually copied his style too directly in this novel. I think there is definitely something of his in this novel, but I’d like to think that I’m aping more the era than the writer. I had in mind all those 50s and 60s detective films, the private investigator is stylised, cryptic, pushing a door open with a gun in his hand, nudging forward. To some extent, it’s a childhood movie image that stayed with me and got reproduced here. As I said, I picked through the Chandler novels, afraid that I was going to discover that I had lifted whole sections, but luckily that wasn’t the case. I located a couple of phrases of mine that I had used in real life and reproduced, but thankfully that was the sum total of my plagiarism. I guess that outside of academia if you are quoting yourself, that’s kind of ok.

Wesley Gray

Aurora’s, London

Friday 17th June

Wesley Gray was a very rich man. And that made him very happy.

He’d spent the first 20 years of his life grafting hard, right up until he found himself in the world of financial banking. Specifically, as a hedge fund manager. From there, it was a cutthroat rise to the top. And he wasn’t ashamed to say he’d screwed a fair few people along the way.

But that was the beauty of being so filthy rich. He didn’t need to worry about shit like that anymore.

He could do what he wanted, when he wanted. And on Fridays, he wanted to be sitting at his regular table at Aurora’s, Soho’s chicest restaurant. Known for its flamboyant history as a former brothel, Aurora’s was an exclusive club for the mega-rich.

Which is exactly where he was.

It wasn’t a big place, but it was still decadent in every way imaginable, with tables spaced far enough apart that multi-million-pound business deals could be discussed without the risk of being overheard. It was famed for its extensive drinks list with wines from all around the world, some of which were almost a hundred years old. And the best part? The Michelin-star, world-renowned chef in the kitchen delivering a fresh menu every week.

The room was accented with deep red walls, plush leather chairs, and artwork from the latest talent London had to offer. It was full, as it always was. It took months to get a table at Aurora’s.

But Wesley Gray had a permanent reservation.

Second table along, at the front. Far enough away from the door that he wouldn’t be disturbed, but close enough that he didn’t feel like he was at the back of the room.

The waiters all knew him.

He tipped generously, so they knew to anticipate his every whim.

Now in his fifties, Wesley Gray had long since retired. If retired was even the right word. Sure, he owned London’s largest investment firm that spanned multiple continents and had huge offices in all the major worldwide cities; New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, and San Francisco to name a few. They were just his favourites, and he visited them all regularly, mostly for pleasure, not business.

Turns out when you’re not chained to a desk from 6am to 9pm, there’s a lot of pleasure out there in the world. A lot of women who would happily throw themselves at him. And he didn’t even need to treat them well.

Opposite him sat his latest conquest. She was tall, long-legged, and had black chin-length hair. He’d surprised himself really, because normally he was into big-boobed blondes, but this one had practically fallen into his lap at the fundraiser gala on Tuesday, and she was deliciously submissive in the bedroom.

The waiter approached the table to take their order.

“Good evening, Mr Gray,” he said.

“My usual wine,” said Wesley Gray. “And we’ll both have the chef’s special.”

The menu didn’t offer a chef’s special. But it had become a tradition of sorts. It normally resulted in a hand-picked dish from the menu with an added flourish.

The waiter nodded, jotted the order down onto his little pad and then disappeared from the table, taking the menus with him. Another thing he liked about this place – it was old school.

No mobile phones allowed inside. Which meant no cameras. Making it the perfect place to meet with people you didn’t want to be seen with by the paparazzi. It didn’t stop them camping outside almost 24/7, but it did offer a modicum of privacy that was impossible to get anywhere else.

Less than five minutes later, another waiter appeared at the table carrying the already uncorked wine. He showed Wesley Gray the bottle and poured it into the wine glasses on the table. Normally, Wesley Gray would be offered the courtesy of tasting the wine before being poured an entire glass.

He glanced up at the waiter and realised that it wasn’t a face he recognised. In fact, it was a perfectly neutral face, the kind you forgot almost instantly after seeing it. The waiter didn’t smile or acknowledge him in any way. He simply finished pouring and paused as Wesley Gray brought the wine to his lips and took a sip. Then the waiter gave a small nod of his head and left.

Frowning, Wesley Gray took another sip of the wine, wondering at the strange behaviour. It tasted perfectly fine. Not that he was a wine connoisseur by any means, he just liked the feeling of power that came from buying expensive things.

Glancing across the table, his date looked bored. Her eyes were flitting around the room, clocking the different faces sitting at the tables, and he immediately regretted bringing her. But there was nothing he could do about it now.

He opened his mouth to speak, but a wave of dizziness overcame him and he gripped the arm of his chair. His breath came in frantic pants and the glass of wine slipped from his fingers, spilling on the plush cream carpet as he gasped for air.

Desperately, he pushed his chair away from the table in an attempt to stand up, but he couldn’t breathe. By now, restaurant-goers were turning to stare at the commotion, and several waiters rushed forward to assist as he fell to the floor.

“Someone call an ambulance!” shouted his date, horror written all over her face.

But it was too late.

Wesley Gray was dead.

A photograph can tell the truth. It can also get you killed.

Ethan McGuire’s relentless pursuit of explosive stories has cost him his family, his integrity, and now–possibly–his life. While documenting the rise of white supremacist movements in Western New York, Ethan encounters a world of neo-Nazis, heavily armed survivalists, rogue FBI agents, and violent criminals, all with something to hide. But when a crew of ruthless bank robbers starts hunting him for photos he doesn’t even know he has, the stakes turn deadly.

As his enemies close in and his family becomes a target, Ethan must expose the truth–before it buries him. Shooting at Shadows is a relentless thriller and chilling cautionary tale, inspired by the author’s real-life experiences as a photojournalist. It exposes the darkness lurking beneath the surface of American extremism–and the cost of bringing it to light.

“One hopes that McMullin has further adventures planned for his unlikely hero.” –Kirkus Reviews

“…a provocative thriller exploring highly pertinent themes in American culture today…” –Fredrick Soukup, author of Blood up North

Read an Excerpt

Someone outside began pounding on the truck in time to the chant and within moments it sounded like everyone who could reach the sides was pounding too:

“BOOM BOOM BOOM! BOOM BOOM BOOM!

“KKK! GO AWAY! KKK! GO AWAY!”

It was deafening, like being inside a giant bass drum. The thin metal walls of the truck amplified the beating and Ethan could feel the horrible reverberation in his chest. Everyone moved toward the center of the bed as if the walls could come crashing in on them at any second. The two holding the rear gate down were fighting the door as people outside tried to raise it.

Suddenly the pounding stopped and Ethan felt the truck moving. The crowd was so loud he hadn’t heard the engine start. But how could they get through that mob without running anyone over? Maybe if Kevin went slowly enough, they’d let the truck pass. Surely the police would be able to get there and see to their safety. Then he realized it wasn’t forward motion he felt. The truck was swaying side to side. The chanting changed too. “O-VER! O-VER! O-VER!” They were trying to turn the truck on its side. Ethan didn’t think it could be done, but with this many people it was impossible to know for sure.

Everyone inside moved away from the center and put their hands against the sides to steady themselves. It was like trying to stand in a boat on choppy seas. Back and forth, back and forth the truck rocked, gaining momentum every time. Ethan saw the men holding the door down lose their balance and fall. The door rose and blinded them with brilliant sunlight.
