FalconSaga

by Robert Winter

Genre: Epic Fantasy

In modern-day Iceland, a place of glaciers, volcanoes, and legends, the Norns have foretold a sorcerous invasion that could destroy everything.
Magnús, an elf of the huldufólk, is driven by the murder of his human lover a century ago to save those humans he can, and to figure out what is behind recent troll attacks on tourists. But the Norns have spoken. He must protect Altair, a young human from Boston, who is bringing a dangerous magical force to Iceland. If Magnús fails to keep Altair safe, the country will fall to a sorcerer called the Black Priest. Yet if Altair lives, Magnús will meet his doom.
For his part, Altair is a graduate student bullied to visit Iceland by mentors who seem to have their own agenda. He knows nothing of elves, sorcerers or prophecies. Suddenly, the handsome, mysterious Magnús is guiding Altair around Reykjavik and into danger. A witch, a berserker, and more elves are along for the quest across Iceland’s forbidding landscape. And why does everyone keeps calling Altair “the Falcon”?

Robert Winter is a recovering lawyer who likes writing about love and adventure much more than drafting a legal brief. Once upon a time, he went to Georgetown University law school. Upon graduation, he moved to New York to work in a large law firm, but later returned to Washington, DC. The legal work was entertaining and Robert spent a lot of time in bankruptcy court, usually representing either groups of creditor or the debtors themselves. But legal work didn’t satisfy the urge Robert felt to tell stories.

When he turned 50, Robert left behind the (allegedly) glamorous world of international law firms and bankruptcy court to pursue his real passion. Now he lives in Montreal with his husband, studying French between trips to exotic locations.

When Robert isn’t writing, he loves to cook Indian food. The aromas of the spice blends excite and challenge him. Although he’s never been to India, the food seems comforting and home-like. Add a trip to the Golden Triangle to the bucket list!

January 2025 Free ebooks – 1st to 15th

2025 Glitter Happy New Year GIF » WordsJustforYou.com - Original Creative Animated GIFs

When I was in my 20’s, any year after 2000 seemed like it would be science fiction.  😂🤣  And, now, here we are.  We aren’t flying in personal ships vs cars and we still don’t have teleportation.  Darn.

But, we’ve had a lot of historical breakthroughs in technology and medicine.  Personally, I feel most of that stems from reverse engineering tech we either found, or were given, by interstellar aliens.  If you’ve watched any of my YouTube gaming videos, I’m pretty clear where I stand on that issue.

Anyway, to start 2025 off, I’m going to highlight Kindle Unlimited books.  If you’re an avid reader, you’d save money have a Kindle Unlimited membership vs buying books that you love.  And, you can’t just except to read only FREE books.  Authors don’t make a living that way.

Enjoy, and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

My Book Review of A Curse for Christmas (Trouble Down Under) by P.A. Mason

DESCRIPTION:

Christmas back home in Arkansas sounded like a chance to put my feet up for a few weeks. Little did I know that a magical calamity would threaten the big day.

You know the real kicker? It was Mom—a renowned magical healer—who came down with a mystery malaise on Christmas Eve. I couldn’t remember a time where she had anything worse than a sniffle. To see her bedridden scared me to my core.

To examine the facts and solve the case, I had to think fast before Mom’s condition got any worse. With a new werewolf beau in her life, half the town of Tumbling Springs were whispering behind Mom’s back, the loudest of them a hex witch with a nasty view of weres. On the other hand, a new business rival in the next town over had Mom’s healing services on the rocks. The question was—did either witch have enough motive to do something as awful as all that to Mom?

If you enjoy paranormal cozy mysteries with a seasonal Christmas flare, this holiday special is for you.

MY REVIEW:

I ran across this title on Julie’s blog, as she had posted a review.  We enjoy reading the same books, and since it was a short story and FREE, I decided to give it a go.  I hadn’t read a cozy mystery for some time so I was looking forward to reading it.

The author did a great job in getting the reader to connect to her characters.  Katarina, the main POV, is very likable and so are the secondary characters.  I did feel that her mother’s were boyfriend wasn’t so well-developed, but it kinda made sense.  The one character I would have loved to get to know in person, is Gramma.  She’s a real hoot.

Usually with a cozy mystery, you expect some type of murder and that’s when the sleuthing begins.  Not so in this case.  It’s a run against time to save her mother from dying from a hex.

I did enjoy the tale, and I found another free, short story with the same characters: A Flytrap Fiasco.  I’ve already downloaded it and can’t wait to get into that one too.

If you love short stories, cozy paranormal mysteries with a holiday theme, you might want to pick this book up.  I give it 4 stars.

#SaharasMusings – The Magic of Christmas Lights

I haven’t decorated for Christmas in many years.  And, living in an apartment complex, surrounded by other complexes, I don’t see too many decorations in my neighborhood.  Especially, since I don’t leave my apartment very often.

When my sister suggested we go check out the Christmas lights at the Lauritzen Botanical Gardens in Omaha, I jumped at the chance. I went with my sister, sister-in-law, cousin, and her sister-in-law. To say we were totally enchanted is an understatement.

I’m the fat one in the middle.  From left to right, my cousin, sister, sister-in-law, and cousin’s sister-in-law.

The first thing you notice, after you walk in, is this huge mini train track.  It goes all over through several different rooms.  They also have different tracks at other locations through the tour. This one goes by several mine buildings depicting important locations known in Omaha.  We probably spent almost 30 to 45 minutes just looking at the displays.  My sister-in-law loves miniatures and has her own collection.

However, the biggest attraction in the main building was this huge Christmas tree made out of over 400 Poinsettias. We all marveled at how long it must have taken to, not just make this tree, but to assemble that enormous train track and put out all the other decorations.

They had volunteers to take pictures for you standing in front of this gorgeous tree.  You can see how tall the tree is when you look at the picture above with us posing in front of it.

However, the most magical part of our trip was yet to come.

Lauritzen Gardens is spread out over several acres, and I’ve wandered their pathways before enjoying the beauty of their flowers and plants.  They also have a huge green/hot house and that’s where w headed next.

This is where we were struck in awe by the shear magical atmosphere of the place.  If you wear glasses, they will fog up immediately as soon as you walk inside.  LOL.  Below, are some of the most stunning pictures I took.  Of course, a camera can’t quite capture the ambiance of the surrounds.

And, there was a train here, too.

We went on a Monday evening, and I’m glad we did.  By the time we left, it was full of families with children.

If you’re ever in Omaha, and you’re looking for a different type of place to visit, I highly recommend them.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Cheryl was born into a poor mining family in the South Wales Valleys. Until she was 16, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and the bath hung on the wall. Her refrigerator was a stone slab in the pantry and there was a black lead fireplace in the kitchen. They look lovely in a museum but aren’t so much fun to clean.

Cheryl has always been a storyteller. As a child, she’d make up stories for her nieces, nephews and cousin and they’d explore the imaginary worlds she created, in play.

Later in life, Cheryl became the storyteller for a re enactment group who travelled widely, giving a taste of life in the Iron Age. As well as having an opportunity to run around hitting people with a sword, she had an opportunity to tell stories of all kinds, sometimes of her own making, to all kinds of people. The criticism was sometimes harsh, especially from the children, but the reward enormous.

It was here she began to appreciate the power of stories and the primal need to hear them. In ancient times, the wandering bard was the only source of news, and the storyteller the heart of the village, keeping the lore and the magic alive. Although much of the magic has been lost, the stories still provide a link to the part of us that still wants to believe that it’s still there, somewhere.

In present times, Cheryl lives in a terraced house in the valleys with her son, dog, bearded dragon and three cats. Her daughter has deserted her for the big city, but they’re still close. She’s never been happier since she was made redundant and is able to devote herself entirely to her twin loves of writing and art, with a healthy smattering of magic and mayhem
