Featured Book: Dead Cat, Run by Annabelle Lewis

You’re where you’re meant to be. Run, if you can.

High school senior Jenny Gallagher’s psychic abilities have made life in her small New England town rocky. Her premonitions and déjà vu have given her a reputation, one she’s not happy with. Tragedy is about to strike, however, and oddly, this time, she doesn’t see it coming. Is her gift betraying her?

Not far from Jenny, Wellesley Professor Maximus Dyer also has a gift—a painful and useless one. His ability to see the past has brought him insight into history, but otherwise, he’s never known what to make of it. The psychic shocks he receives through his unprotected hands have made any genuine human relationships beyond his grasp. Then someone who doesn’t trigger a vision enters his life—a dog?

Sidrah Keeling runs determinedly optimistic throughout her life, trying hard not to ask the big questions about why. Her foresight, her ability to see glimpses of the future in her dreams, often drives her to follow a path she doesn’t understand. Alert and listening, with the guardrails of security she’s erected in place, she’s forced again to follow her dreams. This time to a man. Who is he?

Lurking deep in his sensory deprivation tank, Turner Black sees it all. Born out of the great chaos of time, he once again feels the forces of good gathering to move against him. Not in this life. This time, his darkness will reign supreme. The hunt for his antithesis will begin again now. He can’t wait to feel his opponent in destiny bleed.

A fast-paced contemporary mystery thriller with a supernatural hierarchy, Dead Cat, Run will keep you up all night, glued to your seat.

Sahara’s Book Review of Eternity’s Mirror (Eternal Chronicles Book 2) by Zachary Hagen

DESCRIPTION:

Flip the coin and find a whole new world on the other side.

The Circle is uniting the countries of Lux Terra. Elior, Nyx, and Opal are finding that some things have changed as the result of their adventures with Michael. Yrahkaz has been tasked with squashing the growing obsession with Michael.

When an important clue to finding Eliam and fixing Nyx’s and Opal’s problems is given to them, they recruit the help of a disgraced magi-technician to get to him, but their initial success is more then they bargained for.

The other side of the Mirror of Eternity is filled with wonders and dangers they never imagined. Will they still be able to prevail against an evil that is bent on devouring them whole, or will they fall prey to its cunning pursuit?

Eternity’s Mirror is the thrilling continuation of The Eternal Chronicles picking up where Eternity’s Well left off.

MY REVIEW:

I wanted to read this series after I did a #ReadOutLoudChapter for book two and it sounded intriguing.  I started with Eternity’s Well but it didn’t upload to my kindle correctly and was unreadable.  I contacted Amazon, but we all know how THEY work.  Crickets.  So I just jumped into book two hoping I’d figure it out as I went along.

Zachary has created two different realities on the flip side of a coin.  The non-magical side reminded me of Steampunk.  The other reality was very epic and fantastical and his descriptions of that world were lovely.  Something that readers of The Chronicles of Narnia would enjoy.

I’m not sure who the main POV is supposed to be, as there is head-hopping between all the different characters, but I think it’s Elior.  Though I could relate to his plight, I felt for Opal the most.  She had a kingdom to take back and she was the strongest of them in her faith of accomplishing that goal.  I also related to Yrahkaz.  Maybe he did choose the wrong path but is it too late for him to redeem himself and get his sons back?  I hope not.

What I didn’t like was the lack of editing.  Every time I’d get settled into the tale, up popped either a wrong word like stocked for stalked, or read for red,  which pulled me right out of the story.  There were even a few times when the wrong name was used.  Sigh.  Each time that happened, I’d roll my eyes and try to melt back into the tale.

Readers who love mythical creatures, epic quests, fellowships, and good against bad, will enjoy this story.  I give it 3.5 stars rounded to 4.

#SaharasMusings – Returning eBooks

17 Little Things You're Doing That Annoy The Hell Out Of Hotel Workers

I have never been a person to return items for a refund.  I think it’s because as a kid, my mom used to drag us down to the Philips Store and we’d wait in line which sometimes seemed like hours.  With 4 kids and being lower middle class, I understand why she did.  But it built a hatred in me for that practice.  Even today, if I order something online and it doesn’t fit or ended up being not what I expected, I never return it.  Some of that reason is it’s such a hassle when you’re a non-driver.

Nothing New GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

But lately, and it’s not a new trend, just new on Tik Tok, readers are encouraging each other to ask for refunds on ebooks they’ve bought and read.

What In The Hell GIFs | Tenor

Out of the hundreds of hardbacks, paperbacks, or eBooks I’ve bought, I would never ask for a refund. Even ones I couldn’t finish.  The problem is Amazon has made it too easy to just push a button, and Vola, refund initiated.

Push Button GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

Asking for a refund on an eBook, especially from indie authors, is like buying cookies at your kid’s school bake sale and then asking for a refund after you’ve eaten them all.  Do you like working for nothing?  ‘Cuz that’s exactly what you expect from authors.  Even if the book hasn’t seen a proper editor, you don’t know how much time and money was spent just to get it published.  And then you read it and demand a refund?

Nope, not kosher.

You know there are TONS, I mean THOUSANDS of free ebooks out there.  And not all on Amazon.  Yes, I know most of them are a first in series.  So what?  If you like the story and characters enough to want to read the next one, then save your money and buy it.  Add it to your collection.

And then there are author’s newsletters, like MINE or NORNS where we offer you a FREE eBook just for joining.  Yeah, I know, you don’t want all those stupid emails.  Well, some of the newsletters, like ours, have features and one of them are links to Free eBooks.  You don’t even have to do the searching yourself.

Boom GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

Boom, right there in your inbox and only twice a month.

And then there are places like AuthorsXP, NetGalley, or Readers’ Favorite that offer you free books to read.  The catch is, you have to read and review the books you’ve been given.  Oh No!  That’s too much work!

Nothing Is Free GIFs | Tenor

Honey, ain’t nothin in life is FREE.  If you think that, you done gone to the wrong school.  🤣😂 Until next time.

New Release: The Legend of Sarah by Leslie Gadallah

Classic Canadian science-fiction novel The Legend of Sarah by Leslie Gadallah  now available in new edition from Shadowpaw Press

The Legend of Sarah by Alberta author Leslie Gadallah, a classic Canadian science fiction novel originally published as The Loremasters by Del Rey Books in 1988, is now available in a new, revised edition from Shadowpaw Press.

The Legend of Sarah is being released under the Shadowpaw Press Reprise imprint, which publishes new editions of notable, previously published work.

“A big thank-you to Shadowpaw Press for making The Legend of Sarah available again,” Gadallah said. “I do believe the story is more relevant now than ever, and I’m glad new readers will be able to enjoy it.”

The Legend of Sarah is a terrific and timeless tale of post-apocalyptic science fiction that deserves to find a whole new audience,” said Edward Willett, editor and publisher of Shadowpaw Press. “I’m thrilled to be able to give it that opportunity.”

The Legend of Sarah can be bought directly from the publisher or from most online bookstores in both ebook and print and can also be ordered through any brick-and-mortar bookstore. This handy URL provides links to multiple online sources:  https://books2read.com/thelegendofsarah

More about the book

At fourteen, Sarah is an accomplished pickpocket who knows all the back streets and boltholes of the town of Monn. She steers clear of Brother Parker and his Church of True Faith, knows better than to enter the Inn of The Honest Keeper, and avoids the attentions of Butch, the Miller’s son, as best she can.

The one bright spot in Sarah’s day is listening to the storyteller’s tales of the magically easy lives of the Old People—and if,  as darkness falls, one of the wealthier listeners happens to be so intent on the storyteller’s voice that he becomes careless of his own purse, well, so much the better. Inspired by the storyteller’s narratives, Sarah often imagines her own life as the stuff of legend for some future troubadour.

But even such daydreams can’t prepare her for becoming embroiled with a witchy Phile—an agent of the devil, come in search of the Old People’s hidden secrets. How could Sarah have known that picking the wrong pocket would strand her in the middle of a power struggle among Brother Parker, the Governor, and the encroaching Phile spies?

Praise for The Legend of Sarah

“Beneath the deceptively simple adventure, Gadallah has a lot to say about relationships and community; about religion, politics, and prejudice; and above all, about finding one’s own way through whatever comes one’s way. As page-turning as the best adventure novels, Gadallah’s books stay with the reader longer because she has something more to say, which makes for a richer reading experience…The Legend of Sarah is a good example of Canadian science fiction precisely because it is not typical of other heroic SF from the same period. The appeal of The Legend of Sarah is much broader, however, because the love of a good adventure and of good writing is universal.” – Robert Runté, PhD

About the Author

Snowman!! by Matthew Bennett Young

A picture book about snowflakes, dreams and love, for sensitive people, brought to you by poet and children’s author Matthew Bennett Young

The book is published by Compton Press and is available worldwide in paperback

★ Reflective, meditative text.

◆ Relaxed pace of reading.

• Creates a sense of calm in the reader.

♥ Illustrations based on the beautiful photographs of snowflakes by Wilson Bentley.

Snowman is a reflective, meditative text that is designed to slow down the often dramatic pace surrounding a child’s life. The intention with only a single sentence per page and the careful repetition of the snow flake motif are used to encourage a relaxed pace of reading, to create a sense of calm and to allow the reader to spend more quality time with the text.
The sense of space and the absence of multiple stimuli is purposefully non-sensational. The story, told through a conversation between a child and their parents, is one about love. It has a dreamy quality, and uses the imagery of snow to talk poetically about love.

Freedom of dreams, openness of interpretation
Dreams are used to signify the freedom that reflective thinking, imagery and metaphors can afford. The use of dreams is also to encourage the idea that images, stories and concepts can be open to other interpretations (like Maybe Colours does).

The Snow Woman
Snowman could be a criticism of the gender imbalance present in many societies. In English and in most Western languages, we talk of a snow*man*. Here we have a snowman who is need of his equal female counterpart. On the one hand, this may be a comment on the nature of interdependence between men and women, and may imply that men are more dependent on women than is popularly realised. On the other hand, this is a male snowman’s voice that is asserting the need for a balance between male and female “snowperson” representation!

Metaphors of love
The story is a romance. However, there is the potential for the reader to consider many questions that arise from using snowflakes as a metaphor for the theme of love. The colour white (softness? Coldness?), the coldness of snow (loneliness? Sadness?), the melting of the snowman and woman (transience of love and life? Melting as the warmth of love?) all give rise to discussions of many ideas about love in our lives – for winter, for activities, for family and friends.
