Sahara’s Book Review of Tethered (Aurora Wasteland) by Vaughn Ashby

DESCRIPTION:

There is a Ghost Penis Monster and a Giant Hell Spider in this book, you’ve been warned!

In 1982 Moe killed a man while defending his son.
The next day the man came back.
In 1982 Moe went missing.
The man continued to come back.
In 2014 events are repeating themselves.

In a race against time, reason, and more time, Shane has to unwind mysteries of the past in order to save his friend Jason who has gone missing.

Ugh…. That sounds heavy. While all the above is true, this book also have a Ghost Dick Monster that stabs his ghost dick into a guy’s shoulder… seriously, that actually happens in this book.

Also, the main dude Shane, mentioned a couple of paragraphs above, well he and his wife are having issues. They both want to bang more, but they aren’t good about talking about it, so it’s this whole thing. Anyway, they are cute and shit together by the end, shit… is that a spoiler… shit… can you say shit in a book blurb? Oh well, whatever this book is not for kids… So fuck it, I’ll say whatever I want… boobs.

Anyway, this book has LaughsSexMonstersMysteries, and a dick ton of other really cool stuff that I won’t spoil here. You want to be cool, right? Well, then you better read this book, I mean all your cool friends already have. Don’t ask them, just trust me.

The first book in the Aurora Wasteland Literary Universe, which combines Horror, Scifi, and Humor. All books in the Aurora Wasteland Literary Universe are interconnected but are also stand-alone novels, and can be read in any order you’d like.

Welcome to the AURORA WASTELAND.

MY REVIEW:

I featured this book on my blog back in June as a Free Book. The blurb caught my attention, I mean how can a Ghost Penis Monster NOT catch your attention?  So I had to download a copy. At that time it was free in KU, now it’s not.  If you don’t want to pay $2.99, just click on the above link, join his newsletter and get ready for a wacky ride.

I haven’t read a storyline this convoluted for a very long time. It skips times, POV’s, and places so it can be confusing.  I’d set the book aside several times to read other books I had to get done.  Now I wish I hadn’t.  I feel like I’ve missed some of the impact from the ending as each time I had to remember what the hell the story was about.

If you’re a purist about editing, Ashby’s writing style might irk you, but it really does fit the story.  There are plot twists and Aha moments, but I’m still scratching my head over what actually happened.  I think I understood the concept of what happened.  Maybe?

Regardless, if you love horror, gruesome deaths, weird paranormal crap, you’ll enjoy this book.  I give it 4 stars and I’ll be reading the next one.

Sahara’s Book Review of Manufacturing Civility by Christian Masotti and Lewena Bayer

DESCRIPTION:

Incivility at work is real. And it is real in manufacturing.

According to a Gallup State of the American Workplace report, 75 percent of manufacturing workers are disengaged at work. In fact, the manufacturing industry, according to the Gallup report, is the least engaged industry across sectors.

A closer look at the research reveals that a primary cause for this disengagement is poor leadership. Specifically, supervisors and managers with low social acuity are co-creating uncivil workplace cultures.

Manufacturing Civility provides a 6Cs formula for solving people problems. These strategies result in continuous improvements that shift workplace culture away from traditional toxic and uncivil organizations towards healthier, more positive workplace experiences for employees in manufacturing environments.

The “people-treatment” aspects of the proprietary Manufacturing Civility methodologies have been co-created by 20-year, internationally recognized experts in the field of civility training-Lewena Bayer, CEO of Civility Experts Inc., and a veteran of the manufacturing industry, Christian Masotti. The tried-and-true methodologies shared in the book have been proven to impact individual morale, wellness, and outlook in organizations across sectors, including manufacturing.

Civility-when specifically applied to how people are treated at work, is a continuous improvement strategy that has been proven to have measurable impacts on:

• Retention and engagement

• Performance

• Workplace wellness and safety

• Innovation, creativity, and problem-solving• Bottom-line business metrics, including profitability

MY REVIEW:

I’ve never been in manufacturing but have spent 45 years in an office environment.  I wasn’t sure if this book would relate to that type of workspace, but it really does.

At first I was a bit skeptical, thinking, yeah, just another fad to sell to corporations.  The company I’ve worked for most of my life got into the whole Agile thing and I can honestly say the management has gone downhill ever since.

However, as I read further into the book it became relatable to even an office workspace.  There are a lot of good pointers and charts showing how incivility effects employees and the companies bottom line.  I did feel some of the teachings were a bit too much from a liberal/social justice stance but then I had some maintenance work done in my apartment yesterday.  The head guy was telling his helper how to complete the job.  His tone was brash, loud, and it made me feel uncomfortable, I can’t imagine how his worker felt.  Which made me think about this book and how TONE really does make a difference between employer/employee.

If you’re in a supervisory or higher position and  you’re experiencing a lot of absenteeism or bad attitude from your workers, you need to read this book.  I give it 4 stars.

Sahara’s Book Review of The Flower Enigma by Charles Breakfield & Rox Burkley

DESCRIPTION:

JJ and Jo find the ideal spot to get away from their busy work lives—Magnolia Bluff offers Flower Bed & Breakfast, a quaint country destination within the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

They pull up to the picturesque building only to discover a crowd of citizens anxiously awaiting a special podcast, created by a group of local women, to start. Flower B&B is the sponsor of today’s show in this multi-day series. The couple works through the human log jam. As they check in, they learn that a cyber-attack may prevent the show from airing.

JJ, a technology guru, is convinced by Jo to help the group meet their broadcast promise. While he’s working on the issue, Jo spots a girl in the crowd with fear in her eyes who flashes the international help sign. The teenager vanishes into the throng. Fearful young people signaling for help strikes too close to home for Jo.

Their romantic vacation becomes a journey from one crisis to the next as these vacationers help the evangelizing ladies even as risks are multiplying. Threats expand to include all the podcasters, the show location owners, and suspected missing teens.

Authorities discount the gossipy group’s allegations that Mateo Hernandez built a wall around his property for more than privacy. JJ and Jo work to assemble the necessary clues to convince Chief Jager that Hernandez is a bigger menace. Their nosing around places them both in harm’s way. When Jo is attacked it becomes personal.

This romantic getaway isn’t even close to plan. Lives are at stake, and the young couple won’t accept failure.

MY REVIEW:

I picked up this book thinking it was part of the The Enigma Series, but it’s not.  It’s a whole different series but the titles confused me.  This is book 5 of the series but it can be read as a stand-alone story.

What I liked about the story.  Though this is considered a cozy mystery, the authors touched upon the horrors of human trafficking and the impact it causes to the small towns and surrounding farms along the Texas and Mexican borders.  Mary Lou and her podcasters could be considered busy-bodies, but they saw a threat to their community and decided to be pro-active instead of waiting for the authorities to take care of the problem.  In steps JJ and Jo, and with their help, they’re able to get the sheriff and Feds to take action.  Still, I thought it a bit too pat that JJ happened to be there just when the hacking of the podcasts started.

What I didn’t like.  I am not a fan of using dialogue to describe the scene and what people are wearing.  It makes the conversation stilted and unrelatable as people don’t talk that way.  It’s something novice writers do.  The characters were also too one dimensional.  The only way to tell who was talking was by the dialogue tags.  No individuality at all, and therefore, they were also unforgettable.

If you like cozy mysteries you might enjoy the story.  For me, I give it 3 stars.
