A secret twin sister? Who knew? Emme Mayson and Jackie Dickson discover they are twins, just before an assassin’s bullet kills the only man who knows everything.
Whisked away to an “off-the-books” witness protection program. With the aid of a wanted hacker, and another pitcher of margaritas, Emma and Jackie are determined to discover the truth about their parents’ secret past and why they were separated into North and South….Was it bad enough to have a man murdered to keep that secret?
Murder, mystery and family fuel the fire between two sisters so different the only thing keeping them from starting another war between the states is the need to solve the case, get their answers and stay alive.
MY REVIEW:
This is the first book of Jocie McKade’s I’ve read.
From the first scene in Moe Sheridan’s office, I was sucked into the story. Two parents who both died the same way and two girls who could be long lost twins. What more could you ask for in a whodunit cozy mystery?
There are a wide range of characters with multiple points of view but none of them were confusing. I adore Rosie and Morgan and I hope they end up together.
The story has lots of plots running throughout. Like who really were Emme and Jackie’s parents? Why did they split up the family and who were they hiding the girls from? Who killed the the mobster dude that washed up on the beach? And let’s not forget Fender. What’s his deal?
I got invested in the story and the characters and that’s the only reason why I didn’t DNF it. This should be a 5-star book but it’s held back by horrible editing and a book cover that doesn’t fit the genre. I could really see this as a TV series because the storyline is that good. Think Simon & Simon or Hart to Hart.
Do I recommend the book? That’s a good question. Yes and No. If you can handle missing words, wrong word usage, poorly structured sentences and paragraphs, go for it. You’ll fall in love with the story and characters.
As for me, I give it 4 stars, but I won’t be solving the mystery of Emme and Jackie.
My talent for tracking has made me a damn good bounty hunter for the past decade, but it’s also gotten me solidly under the thumb of notorious casino boss, Kai Warcloud.
I need to break free before I kill him or he kills me. The solution? I have to help Kai track down the notorious con artist Laurent Moreau to New Orleans and drag him back to pay his debts. Just one last job… and I’m finally free.
The catch? Moreau looks like an angel but has the soul and fangs of a vampire with an entourage of bloodthirsty friends to match. Until I catch him, Kai is happy to use my brother as leverage.
But I have an edge: I’m a Spirit Walker, able to commune with the dead. Since vamps are already halfway there, this should be a piece of cake, right?
WRONG.
It’s one hell of a leap to go from bail bonds and bounties to dragging supernaturals back to Texas on the back of a chain, but I’m up for it. My back may be against the wall, but I’m the kind of girl who comes out swinging.
My name is Rebel Weston, and I’m going to hunt you down.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:
Genie’s parents are getting divorced, and it’s all her fault. Her best friends, Beth, Mei, and Whit, convince her to make a wish in the small Minnesota town’s antique well. Genie thinks it’s ridiculous, wishing for her parents to reunite, but what can it hurt? She’s already ruined everything
At the well, a mysterious woman with a walking stick and twigs in her hair, like some sort of homeless mystic, warns the friends to beware. Their wishes are powerful magic. Scoffing at the notion, Genie and friends toss their coins in.
That night otherworldly creatures try to kidnap each girl. Only Beth is captured.
The three remaining friends gather at the well. A mysterious guy named Tristan says he knows where Beth has been taken. Only the power of Genie, Mei, and Whit’s combined wishes can save her. Genie can’t believe magic tied them together, but after her scary encounter the night before, she can’t deny magic might be real.
The friends agree to follow Tristan through a magic portal and step into the legendary island of Avalon, a land separated from Earth after King Arthur’s death. With the help of some young descendants of the original knights of Camelot, the Lady of the Lake, and Morgan le Fay, the three teens set out on a quest to rescue their friend, battle an evil sorcerer, and save two worlds in the process.

A simple exploration of an unknown planet. What could go wrong?
Baldwin Tavares is called up by the Admiral Pitch to join in their expedition to the planet Allende 1-b, also known as Neighbor. Baldwin and his team were requested for their very specific skill set, as they are the best in their individual fields. Eager to be part of something bigger than himself, Baldwin, aka Win, convinces his team to go on the expedition. They aim to find some remnants left behind of the once inhabited planet Neighbor in the hopes of studying and preserving whatever knowledge about them that they find.
Win begins to realize the expedition to Allende 1-B is not entirely scientific. He suspects the Pacific Ocean World Mining Organization, or POMO, have sunk deep into the pockets of the ship’s commanding officers, with the hopes of mining Allende 1-B for its rich mineral reserves as soon as they arrive. As such he immediately starts investigating the ship to confirm his suspicions. When Win finds out he was right, he races to convince the crew against any mining expeditions before it’s too late. However, little does he know something even more pressing will require his attention before he even gets the chance to tell anyone.

Award-winning writer Edward Willett crowdfunding third anthology featuring major science fiction and fantasy authors
Edward Willett, an award-winning Saskatchewan-based author of more than sixty books of science fiction, fantasy, and non-fiction for readers of all ages, is launching a Kickstarter campaign at noon Eastern on March 8 to fund a third annual anthology featuring some of the top writers of science fiction and fantasy working today, all of whom were guests on his Aurora Award-winning podcast, The Worldshapers (www.theworldshapers.com).
Shapers of Worlds Volume III will feature new fiction from Griffin Barber, Gerald Brandt, Miles Cameron, Sebastien de Castell, Kristi Charish, David Ebenbach, Mark Everglade, Frank J. Fleming, Violette Malan, Anna Mocikat, James Morrow, Jess E. Owen, Robert G. Penner, Cat Rambo, K.M. Rice, and Edward Willett; poetry from Jane Yolen; and additional stories by Cory Doctorow, K. Eason, Walter Jon Williams, and F. Paul Wilson. Among those authors are several international bestsellers, as well as winners and nominees for every major science fiction and fantasy literary award.
All of the authors were guests during the third year of The Worldshapers, where Willett interviews other science fiction and fantasy authors about their creative process.
Backers’ rewards offered by the authors include numerous e-books, signed paperback and hardcover books (including limited editions), Tuckerizations (a backer’s name used as a character name), commissioned artwork, original poetry (from Jane Yolen), audiobooks, opportunities for online chats with authors, short-story critiques, and more.
The campaign goal is $12,000 CDN. Most of those funds will go to pay the authors, with the rest going to reward fulfillment, primarily the editing, layout, and printing of the book, which will be published in both ebook and trade paperback formats by Willett’s publishing company, Shadowpaw Press (www.shadowpawpress.com). The special Kickstarter edition for backers will be followed by a commercial release this fall. Stretch goals are simple: for every $5,000 over the goal the campaign raises, the authors will be paid one cent a word more.
Shapers of Worlds Volume III is a follow-up to Shapers of Worlds, successfully Kickstarted in 2020, and Shapers of Worlds Volume II, Kickstarted last year. To Fight Fire with Sun is a chapbook of poetry that dives into the experiences of love and loss. From conception, we have known love (or the lack thereof) and have grown to understand how this experience makes us the humans we are today. Loss comes in all forms. Whether through a friend, lover, or ourselves, we seek to find some method with which we can understand this pain and heal from it. To Fight Fire With Sun is just that- a queer girl’s exploration into how one can love, lose, and heal through the power of words.
MY REVIEW:
Poetry isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Most people think of the dreaded English assignments that were forced on us in high school. Yuck. What I do know of poetry is that it’s a way for the writer to show their emotions, their inner thoughts, losses and wins. The words should also be written with fluidity and roll off the inner tongue.
There were two or three poems in this collection that resonated with me. I felt them in my heart and soul. They’re supposed to be words about grief and the aftermath of losing your other half to death.
I’ve been down that black hole from the death of my soul mate. I’ve felt firsthand the loss of their smile, their touch, their presence , their words. Even the ones spoken in anger. Sadly, the rest of these poems missed the mark. To me, they represented the loss of a lover to another. Not to the clutches of Death.
Maybe I’m tainted. Either way, from my point of view, I give this collection 3 stars. I do recommend this collection as you might feel more than me with Andrews’ words.
War. Magic. A lover’s betrayal. A dark secret lies beneath them all.
Each year, Democryos sends his brightest student into the war-torn countryside to work magic. But when his wife leaves him for a mysterious stranger, he finds his own life ravaged.
Forsaking the comfort of the citadel, he searches for her, traveling through the same forgotten lands where he sent his students. Along the way, he befriends an elusive member of the king’s harem, a holy man harboring guilt, and a maimed soldier. Together, they stumble upon a key—not only to the war, but to understanding the magic of voidance itself.
A “beautiful” medieval fantasy with a “propulsive finale” (Kirkus Reviews).
