Book Review: To Fight Fire With Sun by D. A. Andrews

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

To Fight Fire with Sun is a chapbook of poetry that dives into the experiences of love and loss. From conception, we have known love (or the lack thereof) and have grown to understand how this experience makes us the humans we are today. Loss comes in all forms. Whether through a friend, lover, or ourselves, we seek to find some method with which we can understand this pain and heal from it. To Fight Fire With Sun is just that- a queer girl’s exploration into how one can love, lose, and heal through the power of words.

MY REVIEW:

Poetry isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.  Most people think of the dreaded English assignments that were forced on us in high school.  Yuck.  What I do know of poetry is that it’s a way for the writer to show their emotions, their inner thoughts, losses and wins.  The words should also be written with fluidity and roll off the inner tongue.
There were two or three poems in this collection that resonated with me.  I felt them in my heart and soul.  They’re supposed to be words about grief and the aftermath of losing your other half to death.
I’ve been down that black hole  from the death of my soul mate.  I’ve felt firsthand the loss of their smile, their touch, their presence , their words.  Even the ones spoken in anger.  Sadly, the rest of these poems missed the mark. To me, they represented the loss of a lover to another.  Not to the clutches of Death.
Maybe I’m tainted.  Either way, from my point of view, I give this collection 3 stars.  I do recommend this collection as you might feel more than me with Andrews’ words.
