New Release: Paradise Road: A Memoir by MARILYN KRIETE

Paradise Road: A Memoir by [Marilyn Kriete]

THE STUNNING DEBUT MEMOIR BY CANADA’S OWN, MARILYN KRIETE

A restless child of the 1960s, Marilyn yearns for love, hippiedom, and escape from her mother’s control. At 14, she runs nearly a thousand miles away to Vancouver, British Columbia, eventually landing herself in a Catholic home for troubled girls. At 16, she’s emancipated, navigating adulthood without a high school diploma, and craving a soulmate. When she falls in love with Jack, the grad student living next door, life finally seems perfect. The two embark on a cross-continental bicycle trip, headed for South America, but before they reach Mexico, Jack dies. Utterly shattered, Marilyn does the hardest thing she can imagine: a solo bicycle trip, part tribute, part life test. She conquers her fears but goes wildly off course, chasing her heart as she falls into a series of tragicomic rebounds. Two itinerant years later, a chain of events in Montana’s Bitterroot Mountains leads to a peace she never expected to find.

Reminiscent of Wild and Travelling with Ghosts, Marilyn’s journey portrays a life unmoored by grief, brought to shore again. PARADISE ROAD was selected as the International Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club’s International Book of the Month for March 2021.

After a colorful life spanning four continents and 16 cities, earning her keep as cook, chambermaid, waitress, fisherwoman, missionary, speaker/teacher, tutor, and academic writing editor, MARILYN KRIETE now lives in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, with her charitable husband Henry and three demanding cats. Her poetry and nonfiction have appeared in The Lyric, Storyteller, The Eastern Iowa Review, The English Bay Review, and Brevity Blog. PARADISE ROAD is her debut memoir.

PRAISE FOR PARADISE ROAD:

Paradise Road is a fearless account of Marilyn Kriete’s life of adventure. She unspools the tale of plunging into each chapter of her life with great candor and momentum. She has an uncanny knack for putting the reader by her side through each exhilaration, each heartbreak, each danger, each triumph.” – Kimberley Cetron, author of Fractals: The Invisible World of Fractals Made Visible Through Theatre and Dance

“Watching Marilyn Kriete crack wide open and feel utterly wounded, only to watch her attempt to piece herself back together one mile at a time. From her happiness feeling truly ebullient to her crestfallen soul, we meet a woman furiously bicycling towards her future. Paradise Road is such a beautifully painted story, I felt as if I was with her and cheering her on the entire time.”—Annie McDonnell of The Write Review

“Like Milton’s Paradise Lost and Kerouac’s On the Road, Marilyn Kriete’s Paradise Road is an epic poetic trip. I was bewitched by the language from start to finish and hoping for more.” —Judy Kirkwood, award-winning writer and author of Prelude to a Divorce

“Every once in a while, a memoir comes along that is so inspiring you want to share it with the world. Paradise Road is the very brave story of a woman, who had the tenacity and spirit to rise above all of life’s sorrows and challenges. Five Diamonds in the Pulpwood Queen Mandatory Tiara of great reads!” —Kathy L. Murphy, CEO and Founder of The International Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club Reading Nation

Cover Reveal: The Killer on the Heath by Karen J. Mossman

Cover Reveal: The Killer on the Heath by Karen J. Mossman

Small Tidbits to Tickle Your Reading Taste Buds:

“Because everyone is not wired the same,” Seb had told me. “Some people think what they are doing is okay. Plinth enjoyed the power it gave him. Being brought up by parents who didn’t give a damn and were probably cruel to the boy. It set him up for the man he would become, and the man he thought it was okay to be.”

****

“You can stop that right now!” A shrill voice crashed into us, throwing us apart guiltily. His mother was standing in the doorway looking at us, and for a fraction of a second her eyes were on my chest. Once more she captured me in a compromising position. I felt like a child being caught doing something I shouldn’t. What is it with this woman? Couldn’t she have just waited until we returned? For pity’s sake!

****

Turning, I gazed through the dirty window, and something caught my eye. I stopped and stared as I fingered her scarf. “What? What is it?” he asked, suddenly alert to my stillness. “I think she is here.” “You think?” Seb stepped towards me. Something has been stopping me from seeing as clearly as I usually do. “You searched the back garden?” “Well, yes, you can see what we saw.” I stared, unable to draw myself away for a moment. It was an aura, a presence, like a wisp of smoke or steam, but it wasn’t just that. Something hung in the air outside. Seb was watching me, I thought of Pedro and with clarity and realised it was him that had stopped me sensing Chantelle. The twins were too alike. Too close to each other. His aura shielded hers.

To Kill a King: A Hollystone Mystery: Book 4 (Hollystone Mysteries) by [Wendy Hawkin]

URBAN FANTASY AT ITS BEST BY CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CANADIAN AUTHOR, W.L. HAWKIN

Sorcha just wanted to warn Ruairí of his fate until she saw him and fell in love. How could she leave him to be ritually murdered and cast in a bog to cure for two thousand years?

Though he’s lost and grieving the loss of his lover, when Estrada realizes his fiery friend, Sorcha O’Hallorhan, is trapped in Iron Age Ireland, he demands that Cernunnos take him and Dylan back through time to rescue her. The Horned God obliges but states the rules: you cannot change history or develop bonds with anyone. How can Sorcha, the spirited archaeologist, survive this prehistoric warrior culture? Assuming she’s fey, Ruairí’s unscrupulous rival wants her power; but worse still, Ruairí’s lover, the wicked Crow Queen, wants her dead.

Can Estrada use his Wiccan powers and magician’s skills to defeat these Iron Age Druids and bring his friends home without changing history?

A spin-off of To Sleep with Stones, Book Four tells the story of archaeologist Sorcha O’Hallorhan’s deepest desire. Buy this romantic, time-traveling, prehistoric thriller today and find out what it takes To Kill a King.

EXCERPT:

“Her fingers flew to the fey butterfly tattooed on the back of her neck. Her friend, Yasaman, had designed it for her when she finished grad school. It was her symbol of freedom. Sorcha never wanted to be a professor bound to lecture halls—all she ever craved were the wild places and their stories. Now she was deep inside Ruairí’s story. Sometimes the butterfly brought her joy; other times, inspiration . . . but always a sense of hope. And she needed all three in this moment for her heart was breaking to see her man so broken.”

To Charm a Killer: A Hollystone Mystery (Hollystone Mysteries Book 1) by [W. L. Hawkin]  To Sleep with Stones (Hollystone Mysteries Book 2) by [W. L. Hawkin]  To Render a Raven (Hollystone Mysteries Book 3) by [W. L. Hawkin]

ABOUT W.L. HAWKIN:

image

W. L. Hawkin writes “edgy urban fantasy with a twist of murder” from her loft near Vancouver, B.C.

Her novels—To Charm a Killer, To Sleep with Stones, To Render a Raven, and To Kill a King each stand alone but form the Hollystone Mysteries series. This coven of West Coast witches, and their eccentric friends, solve murders using ritual magic and a little help from the gods.

Although she’s an introvert, in each book her characters go on a journey where Hawkin’s travelled herself. She researches all her locales (Ireland, Scotland, the B.C. Coast) to soak up the sensory landscape. In 2017, she climbed Croghan Hill in Ireland to survey the land her king would rule in To Kill a King, a romantic time-travel thriller set in Iron Age Ireland.

A seeker and mystic, fascinated by language, archaeology, and mythology, Hawkin graduated from Trent University, Ontario, and has post-bac diplomas from SFU in B.C. Her background in Indigenous Studies and Humanities informs her work. She found her voice publishing poetry and Native Rights articles in Canadian news magazines and is now an Indie author/publisher at Blue Haven Press. http://bluehavenpress.com
