BLURB:

It was a simple job: keep an eye on her until she goes safely to bed.

Then all hell broke loose.

The death of a beloved Chicago televangelist’s wife is only the beginning; someone is homiciding their way through the Temple of Majesty Church. Private eye Nod Blake – an aging throwback to a bygone era of detecting on the mean streets – has been dumped in the middle of it all, on his head.

The resulting injuries seem to have opened a door to the hereafter: Blake believes dead people are talking to him. But are the victims really begging the gumshoe for help from the other side of the grave, or has he lost his friggin’ mind?

When his nemesis, Detective Lieutenant Wenders, finds evidence that Blake is the murderer, the private dick’s life becomes a great big soup sandwich.

MY REVIEW:

This is another book that’s been on my kindle since 2015. I’ve been looking forward to reading it, and I wasn’t disappointed.

How can you not love a story with elements of a murder and the supernatural? Yes, this is a genre-bender, but Doug does a fantastic job of melding them together.

As with most of Doug’s other stories, there is sardonic humor along with great storytelling. The characters jump off the pages. No one-dimensionallisam here.

And the plot twists and turns, pulling us along by our ears. I love trying to figure out the whodunit and not getting the answer until the end.

Sadly, too many writers just don’t have the knack to pull that off. It does take talent to write a great murder mystery.

If you love ghost stories and murder, I highly recommend this book. I give it 5 stars.
