Which Birds Eat Sunflower Seeds - Garden Bird Feeder

About three years ago, I heard that birds will eat the seeds from the head of a sunflower plant.  That sounded so cool so I was going to plant a few.  Well, two years later and I still hadn’t planted any.  I’d even bought a packet of seeds but due to several factors, laziness being one 😂🤣, they just never got burned in the dirt.  Another reason was our unusually cold Spring as the seeds need to be sown when the ground temperature is a steady 70 degrees. That didn’t happen here until almost the end of June.  By then, I thought it was too late.

The last factor was my concern where I was going to plant them.  I felt a big container wouldn’t be approbative so I wanted to put them next to my table where they’d bask in plenty of the southern sunshine.  But would they be safe there?  Would they get mowed down by accident?

As you can see by this picture, (Hello, Cleo), that wouldn’t have been a problem.  The crew they hired to maintain the property does a pretty shabby job.  They leave weeds growing everywhere.  When I noticed a larger one pop up next to our building, I figured it was a junk weed.  I even thought about pulling it several times.  But why? It’s not my job.

When it got about waist high, I went over to it and I thought it was a thistle.  They do have pretty flowers but are a noxious plant and forbidden in Omaha.  But, I left it alone.  Then one day, this happened.

A sunflower head opened up.  Wow!  I was so surprised.  I guess Mother Nature granted me my wish.  Actually, I’m sure it started from sunflower seeds I put out to feed my birds.  Now, I’m really inspired to plant some next year.

Your initial picture of a goldfinch eating sunflower seeds has inspired me to plant some next year. We seem to have a dearth of birds here at the moment. Sunflowers might encourage them to return.
